Title: Cementless Knee Replacement Surgery – A Safer And Reliable Alternative - Maitri Hospital

1
Knee replacement surgeries have been in execution
since decades, and have also proven to be
successful. However, these were all total knee
replacements with the entire knee being removed
and replaced with metallic or plastic prostheses.
Slowly and gradually, there were advancements
made in the field, which led to partial knee
replacement surgeries, wherein only the
compartment that was damaged within the knee
bone was removed and replaced. Next in line came
the invasive surgery wherein the least possible
incision was made within the knee to avoid excess
blood flow and damage to the surrounding
ligaments and cartilages.
Among all these innovations and improvisations,
one very successful and safe innovation has been
the cementless knee replacement surgery.
Generally, in the traditional type of surgery,
the damaged bone is removed and the prosthesis is
placed in the space, wherein it is attached to
the leg with the help of cement that is let to
dry and make the attachment firm. But, this
latest cementless procedure involves no usage of
cement between the bone and prosthesis. Instead,
the natural bone is allowed to grow until it
holds the prosthesis in place on its own. Now,
you may say that a cemented procedure is more
durable than a cementless one, while a
cementless procedure may be risky. But, in fact,
it is the other way round! Using cement may keep
the prosthesis firmly in place, but it comes with
its own risks.
2
  • It is possible that tiny granules of the cement
may enter the bloodstream and cause obstruction
of blood flow to essential organs.
  • The cement is hardened with the release of heat,
which may, in the long run, affect the raw bony
surface, which may cause necrosis of the same.
  • There is a rare but possible chance of the cement
loosening with wear and tear of the bones, which
may require a revision knee replacement surgery.
  • On the other hand, the cementless surgery
    involves a different execution. The
  • artificial implant used in cementless surgeries
is porous and hydroxyapetite-coated, which makes
the metallic surface stimulate the new bone
formation. Moreover, the porous nature makes the
new bone grow into the implant surface and
incorporate the metallic implant with the bone.
This kind of surgery brings better results as
compared to the traditional cemented procedure.
  • The cementless procedures results in better
    biological fit of the implant.
  • The cementless procedure has no granules to enter
into the bloodstream, and no implant loosening
possibility thus making it safe and more stable
    too.
  • The cementless procedure has a shorter surgical
time as it doesnt require any kind of element
    (like the cement) to dry.
  • Thus, while the cementless procedure may sound
risky, it is actually a safer surgical option
when long term results are thought about. No
    doubt, a cementless procedure
  • may require much more care in the initial stages,
until the bone has completely grown and is
strong, but the life of the knee after that will
be one that you may not have to
  • worry about ever! However, it depends upon your
condition to decide upon whether a cementless
option is right for you. Thus, you need to take
    advice from a professional
  • to make a decision. One place you can go to for
this is Maitri Hospital, where you can get
