Title: Know About the Various Types of Drivetrain in Cars
1Know About the Various Types of Drivetrain in Cars
2The drivetrain of any car is a system that
delivers power to the driving wheels which is
mainly comprised of the engine and transmission.
3As per different environments, there are
different arrangements of components that connect
the engine into the wheels to form the distinct
drivetrain.
4There are mainly four different types of the
drivetrain which are discussed below
Front-wheel drive (FWD)
Rear-wheel drive(RWD)
All-wheel drive (AWD)
Four-wheel drive (4WD)
5Rear-wheel drive
6In RWD system, the power from the engine is
delivered to the rear wheels of the car and the
standard layout has the engine longitudinally
mounted at the front.
7 The power from the engine is transmitted via a
driveshaft to the differential, and then
distributed in a perpendicular direction to the
rear wheels and propels the car.
8The rear-wheel-drive provides room for larger,
stronger axles and generates more power suitable
for high horsepower cars.
9Front-wheel drive
10In FWD system, the power from the engine is
delivered to the front wheels of the vehicle and
the engine, transmission and the differential are
all connected to a transversely mounted engine.
11As the front wheels must steer and propel, they
are connected to the axle half shafts via
constant velocity joints, which can transmit
power smoothly while severely segmented.
12The light and simple arrangement allows
manufacturers to put smaller and more efficient
engines under the hood.
13All-wheel drive
14In AWD system, both the front and rear wheels
receive the torque either in equal ratio or
different ratios which in turn propel the car.
15It is almost similar to the 4WD drivetrain, but
the AWD system works all the time and is more
preferred for its on-road handling.
16The power is transmitted from the engine to the
differential located on the rear axle through a
driveshaft.
17Four-wheel drive
184WD vehicles are those vehicles with power
transmitted to both the axles, which in turn
transfer torque to the four-wheel ends.
19The driver has the option to choose either to
transmit power to any two-pair of wheels for
better fuel economy or to all the four wheels for
more traction.
20The transfer case consists of two driveshafts
which supply the power to both the differentials
located at the front and rear of the car.
21Take a note that
22All the drivetrains have their own advantages and
disadvantages, so it is up to the needs, wants,
and use of the driver to be considered before
opting for any car.
