VoIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol is such a
technology which has revolutionised the world of
telecommunications. Cyber threats are always
active and constantly search for any crack in the
security. Therefore for a VoIP phone system which
is mostly online based, firewall is necessary.
Firewalls enable granular control and in turn
enhances the security.
3
  • Firewall forms an important line of defence.
  • Firewall is a network security system designed to
prevent unauthorised access to or from a private
    network.
  • Firewalls are important for a network because
they help to prevent the intranets.
  • Firewall lowers the risk that the malicious
packets travelling over the public internet which
threatens the security of the private network.

4
  • Firewalls are present in both forms hardware and
    Software.
  • The third type of firewall is a combination of
    both hardware and software.
  • Hardware firewalls These are found as
stand-alone products as well as in broadband
    routers.
  • Software firewall These are installed on a
computer like any other software program. It
enables the user to gain some control over its
    function and protection features.

5
  • Some of the important functions of a firewall
    are
  • Defined resources
  • Validate access
  • Manage and control network traffic
  • Record and report on events
  • Act as an intermediary

6
  • Reasons as to why we need personal firewall
  • Surfing the internet at home using 24X7 active
    broadband connection.
  • Connected to the internet via a public WIFI
network in a park, café or airport.
  • Running a home network which is kept isolated
    from the internet.
  • When one wants to know when any program on a
computer attempts to connect to the internet.

7
  • Packet filter Scrutiny of each and every packet
entering or leaving the network. Packets are
    rejected based on user-defined rules.
  •
  • Application Gateway This applies security
mechanisms to specific applications, such as FTP
    and Telnet servers.
  • Circuit level gateway This applies security
mechanism when a TCP or UDP connection is
established. After the connection is established,
packets can flow between hosts without further
    checking.
  •
  • Proxy Server The proxy server intercepts all
messages entering and leaving the network
    address.
