Quartz Quartz is one of the most well-known
minerals on earth. It occurs in essentially all
mineral environments and is the important
constituent of many rocks. Quartz is also the
most varied of all minerals, occurring in all
different forms, habits, and colors. There are
more variable names given to Quartz than any
other mineral. Although the Feldspars as a group
are more common than Quartz, as original mineral
Quartz is the most common mineral. Quartz is the
second most abundant mineral in Earth's continenta
l crust, behind feldspar. Some kinds of Quartz,
particularly the gemstone forms, have their color
enhanced. Almost all forms of the yellow-brown
variety Citrine are in fact heat treated. Much
Amethyst is also heat treated to intensify color,
and a green transparent form known as "Green
Amethyst" or "Prasiolite" is formed by heat
treating some types of Amethyst. There is also a
transparent sky blue form of Quartz crystals, as
well as a wildly iridescent type that is
synthetically colored by irradiation of gold. In
some localities, Hematite forms a thin red or
brown layer internally in the Quartz crystal,
giving it a natural bright red to brown coloring,
and sometimes even a mild natural iridescence.

Abrasive Garnet   Garnets are a group of silicate
minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age
as gemstones and abrasives.All species of garnets
possess similar physical properties and crystal
forms but differ in chemical composition. The
different species are pyrope, almandine,
spessartine, grossular (varieties of which are
hessonite or cinnamon-stone and tsavorite),
uvarovite and andradite. The garnets make up two
solid solution series pyrope-almandine-spessartin
e and uvarovite-grossular-andradite. Typical

heavily as a semi-precious stone 2) Garnet sand
is a good abrasive and a common replacement for
silica sand in sand blasting. Alluvial garnet
grains which are rounder are more suitable for
such blasting treatments. Mixed with very high
pressure water, garnet is used to cut steel and
other materials in water jets. For water jet
cutting, garnet extracted from hard rock is
suitable since it is more angular in form,
therefore more efficient in cutting. 3) Garnet
paper is favoured by cabinetmakers for finishing
bare wood.

filtration media. 5) As an abrasive garnet can be
broadly divided in two categories, blasting grade
and water jet grade. The garnet, as it is mined
and collected, is crushed to finer grains all
pieces which are larger than 60 mesh (250
micrometres) are normally used for sand blasting.
The pieces between 60 mesh (250 micrometres) and
200 mesh (74 micrometres) are normally used for
water jet cutting. The remaining garnet pieces
that are finer than 200 mesh (74 micrometres) are
used for glass polishing and lapping. Regardless
of the application, the larger grain sizes are
used for faster work and the smaller ones are
