Delhi One Day Tour Package - Best Way to Explore
Modern and Ancient Delhi
A thousand years of history lie in Delhi, the
capital of India and its third largest city.
Located in the north where the country is
narrowing between Pakistan in the west and China
and Tibet in the east, Delhi was the capital of
Muslim India from the twelfth to the 19th
century. Historically, it has been the center of
vital trade routes and strategically located at
the gates of the fertile Ganga plain - the
social, religious and cultural social line of
India.

There are now 2 cities of Delhi, New and Old.
There were at least 8 cities listed on and around
the site, the oldest being Indraprastha, existing
since the 3rd or 4th century BC. There are many
legends about the founding of the city and some
archeological dates as to its age. The Tomar
Rajputs founded and fortified the walls of
Dhillika, the first of the medieval cities, in
the 9th century AD and were overthrown in the
12th century by the Jaipur Cauhans who built a
second defensive wall.  The Turkish invaders in
1193 put an end to Hindu domination and began the
new Islamic era of the city.

The following cities have been added next to the
oldest ones. Shah Jahan, the famous creator of
the Taj Mahal, was in charge of the 7th Delhi,
which he called Shahjahanabad. It was the Mughal
capital until 1857. As the Mughal power wanted to
be replaced by that of the British East India
Company, Delhi lost its prestige and became
another provincial city. In 1911, the British
chose Delhi as their capital, transferring the
vice - royal headquarters of Calcutta. Plans were
soon underway to build New Delhi south of
Shahjahanabad and Edwin Lutyens and Herbert
Baker, 2 British architects, were brought to
design it.

The center of the plan consisted of Rashtrapati
Bhavan or Viceregal Lodge (now the presidential
residence), Parliament, Secretariats, Memorial
Arch and Connaught Circus. The city was designed
in a mix of European Renaissance and Oriental
styles to offer a graceful garden setting to
colonial rulers, but after independence in 1947,
the city began a horizontal and vertical growth
and now integrates all the old cities. Develop as
the population grows. Thanks to its long history,
its many rulers and religions, Delhi is a
