  • Health Diet for Kidney stones
  • Small masses of minerals and salt that accumulate
inside your kidneys are known as kidney stones.
Sometimes they also move down the urinary tract
and can be in the size of small tiny dots to as
big as a ping pong ball. Patients suffering with
kidney stones usually complain of pain in the
abdomen or groin and at times they may also have
    blood in urine.
  • Patients with kidney stones need to follow a
different diet. A change in your diet will help
in stopping of further formation of kidney
stones. Depending on the type of stone the diet
would be different. A good dietician will tell
you what diet should be followed for which stone.
  • Calcium Oxalate Stones
  • Calcium Phosphate Stones
  • Cysteine Stones
  • Uric Acid Stones
  • Calcium Oxalate Stones
  • This is the most common type of kidney stones
that are found in patients. People with this type
of kidney stone need to reduce oxalate, sodium
and limit animal protein. They would have to draw
as much calcium from foods. Oxalate would be
found in nuts and their products, spinach,
rhubarb, wheat bran and peanuts. Sodium is
usually high in all packaged, canned, seasonings
and fast food. Animal protein is chicken, fish,
beef, pork, shellfish etc. Even milk and dairy
    products come under it.

  • Calcium Phosphate Stones
  • Like the calcium oxalate stone a patient with
calcium phosphate stone would also have to reduce
sodium and animal protein intake. Plant based
animal protein are good and they can be consumed
soy milk and its products, legumes like lentils
including peanuts or dried peas or beans,
sunflower seeds, nuts and its products are good
proteins which can be consumed. However the
dietician should confirm the quantity per intake.
Calcium should be consumed in the form of
cereals, breads, beans and fortified juices.
  • Cysteine Stones
  • A cysteine stone is a type of kidney stone which
is formed from amino acid cysteine. When a
patient has this type of stone they should drink
a lot of water. A health care professional would
be able to advise you on how much liquid intake
    is required.
  • Uric Acid Stones
  • Such stones are quite common in children. These
are caused by purines which is a chemical
compound found in organ meats, red meats and
shellfish. Animal protein needs to be limited for
patients with this type of stone. Plant based
protein is always good and should be had in a
    limited way.
