  • This study is termed as piping engineering.  The

    plants, construction and many more. Thus, piping
    engineering forms the basis of various
    industries.

  • Types of Fluids
  • When you are designing a piping system, you
    should be aware of the type of fluid that will
    pass through the pipes. There is different types
    of fluids- Ideal, Real, Newtonian, Non-Newtonian
    and Ideal plastic fluid. Different fluids have
    different properties and flow pattern, so their
    handling has to be done differently.
  • Flow of fluids and concept of Reynolds number
  • In pipes, the fluid has three types of flow-
    laminar, turbulent and transient flow. The flow
    pattern and Reynolds number in case of these
    three flows are different. Proper knowledge about
    the flow of fluids and their Reynolds number
    helps in determining piping line sizing.
  • Furthermore, this concept also deals with
    pressure drop calculation which is imperative in
    pipe designing.

  • Concepts involved in computing the size the
    pipeline
  • Sizing is the most vital phase in piping
    engineering as oversizing or under sizing can
    lead to bottlenecking of the piping system. 
    Large pipelines not only increase the operational
    cost but it also creates a problem in the
    functioning of the plant.
  • Whereas small pipelines may consume more energy
    during the movement of fluids.  So sizing should
    be done meticulously. Sizing is dependent on
    various factors and the basic principle involves
    calculating the pressure drop between the two
    ends.
  • Normally, sizing is done after optimizing the
    cost of materials and operational cost. It is
    calculated by comparing the available pressure
    drop and the calculated pressure drop.

  • Concepts related to selection of pump and valves
  • There are two types of pumps- Centrifugal pump
    and Centripetal pump. Selecting the right kind of
    pump and valve makes the flow of fluids easy.
  • The concepts related to the pumps and valves
    include the study of flow and pressure
    characteristics of pumps, selection of pump,
    optimization of the pump, types of valves, flow
    characteristics, and pressure drops in various
    valves.
  • Stress Analysis
  • Stress analysis in a pipe is essential as it
    predicts the stress and loads that result from
    weights, pressure, thermal transients and bolt-up
    strains.
  • It is required in those cases where the pipes
    experience high-temperature fluctuations, long
    pipe runs, or need to carry hot water or
    chemicals.
