How to prevent truck jackknifing in 6 simple steps

Introduction
Truck jackknifing typically occurs when a
heavy-weight truck towing a trailer skids, and
its trailer pushing from behind spins it around
until it comes into a collision with its own
trailer. The jack-knifed truck would then be out
of control causing further accidents. In this
presentation, we have come up with a few ways to
keep truck jackknifing under control. Read on to
know more.
3
1. Ease off the pedal
If you are experiencing a truck jackknife caused
by sudden acceleration, ease your foot off the
pedal immediately. Do not take chances even if it
appears to be the bare minimum of all.
4
2. Learn to brake properly
Avoid slamming down on your brakes. Instead of
braking on the turns, decelerate slowly before
coming to a stop.
5
3. Avoid skidding
If your truck starts skidding, take your foot off
the brake immediately and try to correct the skid
as you would normally do with a rigid vehicle. If
it is not corrected, itll be aggravated further
by the trailer pushing from behind causing the
truck to jackknife.

4. Exercise caution in bad weather
Be particularly careful of jackknifing in adverse
weather conditions. Drive carefully and
responsibly to avoid such accidents.
7
5. Install anti-locking braking system
Modern anti-lock braking system can sense tire
skid and automatically adjust braking force to
prevent wheel lockup. Install it on your truck
for maximum safety.
8
6. Do not brake and swerve at the same time
Brake first to slow down as much as possible.
Then, release the truck to swerve. In this way,
you will remain in complete control of your
truck. If you try to do both at the same time,
your truck may jackknife right out of your
control.
