Title: Types of Foundations for Steel Buildings

1
Types of Foundations for Steel Buildings
When installing a steel building, there are
several steps to the construction process.
However, none is more important than choosing and
laying the foundation. With the right foundation,
you
will be able to ensure the integrity of your
building while preventing serious issues such as
flooding, shifting and other forms of damage.
The foundation that you choose for your steel
building will directly impact the remainder of
the construction process, which is why you need
to learn about the different foundations
available.
Here are some tips you can use to design the
foundation of a steel building so that your
structure stays standing for years into the
future.
2
Surveying the Land Generally, the foundation of
your steel building will be made from concrete.
However, before you can pour the foundation, its
important that you have a professional visit the
proposed construction site to survey the
land. Both the size of your plot and its soil
quality will affect how your foundation will be
designed, which is why surveying the land is so
important. If the lot youve chosen has loose
soil, it can cause your building to shift and
potentially collapse. Instead of designing your
foundation around the loose soil, it is more
common to excavate and replace with better soil.
Depending on the results of the survey, you may
need to grade the soil to the proper height and
shape before laying your foundation. Securing
Your Load An issue that many people arent aware
of is that the horizontal load of a steel
building is much higher than other structures.
This means the taller your building grows, the
more impacted it will be by earthquakes and heavy
winds. Failing to address this issue may cause
your building to overturn. Fortunately, when
laying the foundation of a steel building, you
can account for the horizontal load. By
increasing the footing and using steel tie bars
with anchors, you should be able to diminish the
potential consequences of a high horizontal load,
protecting your steel building from future damage.
Other Factors to Consider
3
Another factor to consider when laying your
foundation is wind uplift, which is when strong
winds lift a building off of its foundation.
Steel buildings are particularly threatened by
this
phenomenon, which is why you must lay your
foundation correctly. Adding deeper footing or
building a heavier foundation should lower your
chances for uplift and keep your building in
place.
Depending on where your building is located, you
also need to consider how frost lines may impact
your foundation. To make sure you have the right
foundation size and weight, you also need
to think about where youre locating your anchor
bolts and the weight of the equipment that will
rest on your foundation.
Lay a Foundation for a Steel Building
As long as you take the proper precautions and
consider the right factors, you should be able to
lay a strong foundation for a steel building.
When youre ready to install your building on your
foundation, you should make sure to purchase your
