Title: Fuel Injection & Engine Management

1
Fuel Injection Engine Management
2
Fuel injection
  • Fuel injection is a system within the engines of
vehicles that forces fuel directly into the a
part of the engine wherever it's burned.
  • For the engine to run smoothly and efficiently it
needs to be provided with the right quantity
of fuel/air mixture according to its wide range
    of demands.
  • Eventually the fuel/air mixture is controlled by
the carburettor, an instrument that is by no
    means perfect.

3
Types of fuel injector
  • There are 2 types of fuel injector system.
  • mechanically controlled
  • electronically controlled.

4
  • In a mechanical system, the injector
is spring-loaded into the closed position and is
    opened by fuel pressure.
  • In electronic system is also held closed by a
spring, but is opened by an electromagnet built
into the injector body. The electronic control
unit determines how long the injector stays open.

5
Engine Management
  • Modern engine management systems do a fine job of
ensuring that engines run cleanly and efficiently
in a wide variety of conditions, they are for the
most part reliable and require little or no
    maintenance.
  • An EMS is a self contained custom built computer
which controls the running of an engine by
monitoring the engine speed, load and temperature
and providing the ignition spark at the right
time for the prevailing conditions and metering
the fuel to the engine in the exact quantity
    required.

6
  • The management system of a car can be its most
complex system, and also its most problematic
system. The management systems job is to monitor
many different engine conditions and report this
information back to the PCM. The PCM will then
use this information to make decisions based on
these inputs and command the appropriate response
    from various actuators.
