1
SOBER LIVING HOUSING A HOUSE AVAILABLE TO HELP
What is Sober Living Housing? Sober living
homes are group homes for individuals
recovering from alcohol and drug addiction.
They are sometimes confused with halfway
houses, but theyre very different. Halfway
houses, generally, are where individuals who
are released from jail, prison, or a
court-mandated offenders home, are ordered
to go for a required length of time.
Sobriety support is offered, but not
required. Sobriety is not the focus of the
home or its residents. Many halfway
houses are government funded. Sober living
houses, on the other hand, are a relatively new
idea. They focus on an individuals ability to
remain free from drug and alcohol use. Sobriety
is a sober living homes primary and total
focus. Residents are at the homes
voluntarily and the atmosphere is usually
more positive and more favorable to
recovery and healing. Sober living housing is
usually privately owned. What Does Sober Living
Housing Offer? Sober living houses offer
a stress-free atmosphere that aids in an
individuals recovery process. It has less
structure than an inpatient rehabilitation
center and was created to meet an individuals
needs. It frequently offers
  • extra one-on-one therapy.
  • therapeutic support, including meditation,
    yoga, massage, acupuncture, etc.
  • additional services, such as Jacuzzis,
hiking trails, walking paths, private rooms,
    group outings, organic cuisine, etc.

Why Would a Person Choose Sober Living
Housing? Sometimes individuals select sober
living housing after theyve been released from
an inpatient rehabilitation center and are
anxious that they wont stay away from drugs and
alcohol once they are back in their previous,
nonrestrictive atmosphere. Some people select
sober living housing because they are
existing in an unhealthy environment with
too many addictive triggers. Whatever the
reason, a sober living home affords the
structure, safety, and support the
individuals requires in order to remain
sober. Some sober living homes require
an individual to have first completed
or be involved in a rehabilitation program
as they feel it helps everyone maintain
the same level of encouragement.

Social Support is Key Social support is
primary at a sober living home. Such
discourages substance use and helps residents
maintain sobriety. How Long Does a Resident Stay
at Sober Living Housing? Residents can stay
at a sober living home as long as they
need, as long as they stay sober and follow
the rules. What Happens at a Sober Living
Home? Each sober living home works
individually, yet similarly. Each lets the
individual work at their own recovery
schedule. Certain homes have a resident
manager, while residents make the rules at
other homes. At more modern models,
residents pay the rent, purchase food, and
actively seek employment, if they are not
already employed. Rules for each often
include adhering to curfew hours,
participating in group counseling sessions,
and performing certain chores. All,
however, have zero tolerance for substance use.
Not following the rules usually results in
expulsion.
