Symptoms of a Bad Fuel Pressure Regulator

Description:

A fuel system in your car is composed of several different components, the most important ones are, a fuel pump, a rail that transports the fuel to the engine and a fuel pressure regulator. Any issue, minor or major, with any parts of the fuel system can pose serious mechanical problems for your vehicle naming, blackened ends of the spark plugs, fuel leaks and black smoke from the tailpipe. These are the few symptoms that alert driver of the impending failure. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

Introduction
  • Like any other vehicle metal equipment, the fuel
pressure regulator can also fail, leading to many
    mechanical problems.
  • In case your car is emitting a thick, dark smoke
and the oil is leaking from a tailpipe, these are
the evident symptoms of a faulty or bad fuel
    pressure regulator.
  • The fuel injection in a vehicle is equipped to
supply fuel to the car engine with a constant
    optimal pressure.

  • There is a spring situated inside the engine
pressure regulator which pushes inside the
diaphragm and maintains the pressure inside it.
  • The tension in the spring is preset by the
vehicle manufacturer so that the driver could get
    the desired fuel pressure.
  • The fuel pump has a job to supply enough fuel
when the pressure strikes to curb the spring
    tension.
  • The additional fuel that is not required is
reverted back to the fuel tank through the fuel
    return pipe.

Symptoms of a Bad Fuel Pressure Regulator
Blackened Spark Plugs
  • Locate the engine spark plugs under the hood of
the car, remove it and examine the ends of it.
  • If the ends are sooty, unclean and blackened, it
could be a sign of bad fuel pressure regulator.
  • If you find even one plug in that condition,
examine the rest of them too.
  • A blackened spark plug is an indication that the
engine is burning oil at that head.

Fuel Leaks
  • Another potentially dangerous issue with the bad
fuel pressure regulator is the continuous fuel
    leakage.
  • When the diaphragm or the seals of the fuel
pressure regulator fail, fuel leaks can take
    place.
  • A faulty fuel pressure regulator will not only
cause gasoline leak, it can also give birth to
    certain mechanical and performance issues.
  • At times of fuel leaks, a noticeable fuel smell
will permit the air and your vehicle may display
    certain engine performance issues.

Black Smoke
  • Black smoke coming from the vehicles tailpipe is
an indication that something is wrong with your
    vehicles fuel pressure regulator.
  • If you are seeing black smoke coming from the
exhaust then you should have the regulator
inspected or if the condition is worse, have it
    replaced as soon as possible.
  • Your vehicles tailpipe should only emit white or
gray smoke, black smoke is a call for immediate
    action.
