  • Retail theft or shoplifting is the most common
    type of theft among juveniles. When a teenager is
    arrested it is a much different process from that
    of an adult offender. For example, juvenile
    courts are civil, not criminal. Juvenile hearings

The Charges
  • Typically theft by a juvenile is generally a
    Class B misdemeanor when the value of the stolen
    property is 499 or less. This charge carries a
    sentence of up to 6 months in jail with a fine of
    1000. A Class A misdemeanor is typically stolen
    property with a value of at least 500 but less
    than 1,500, and carries a term of up to 1 year
    in jail, with a 1000 fine.
  • Shoplifting is a 3rd degree felony when the
    property value is at least 1,500 but less than
    5,000, and valued at 500 but less than 1,500,
    with a term of up to 5 years in jail, and up to
    5,000 in fines.
