Researchers Identify Brain Area Linked To Bipolar
Disorder

• While environment and the lifestyle play an
  intrinsic role in determining the development of
  bipolarity in some individuals, a family history
  of substance abuse, trauma and certain biological
  traits account for the high probability of the
  disorder in others.

Link Between Hippocampus And BD

• Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the
  researchers tried to evaluate the differences in
  the volume of the specific parts of hippocampus.
• It was found that the participants with bipolar
  disorder experienced a significant reduction in
  the volume of subfield 4 of the cornu ammonis
  (CA), with the decline being more conspicuous in
  patients with bipolar I disorder, in which the
  patient had at least one manic episode in his or
  her life, than other mood disorders.

Link Between Hippocampus And BD

• "Our study is one of the first to locate possible
  damage of bipolar disorder in specific subfields
  within the hippocampus," said Bo Cao, Ph.D.,
  first and corresponding author and a postdoctoral
  fellow in the Department of Psychiatry and
  Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at
  UTHealth.
