  With proper nutrition and care, a desert
tortoise can live more than 50 years. A
vegetarian, the tortoise's diet comprises leafy
greens, grasses and weeds, with small amounts of
hard vegetables.

Heres a detailed diet list to ensure the health
and longevity of your tortoise.

• 85 of the diet should consist of dark, leafy
  greens, cactus, grasses and weeds. This includes
  dandelion greens and flowers, endive, grape
  leaves, turnip greens, dark leafy romaine,
  timothy or alfalfa hay, bermuda grass, fresh
  clove, clover hay, rye grass, rice grass, mallow,
  sow thistle and opuntia cactus pads and flowers.

• 15 should consist of hard vegetables such as
  acorn squash, bell peppers (red and green),
  butternut squash and pumpkin.

• Feed cucumbers, radishes, zucchini and watermelon
  sparingly as these are low in nutrition.

• A number of flowers and houseplants can also be
  added as a treat ficus benjamina, geraniums,
  hibiscus, petunias, pothos, rose petals, snail
  vine (vigna caracalla) and violets.
