Legionella Risk Assessment
Performing a Legionella risk assessment is an
important health and safety management process
that will help to protect you, your colleagues,
and others from harm. In the UK, it is a legal
requirement that all businesses and places of
work have and maintain an up to date Legionella
assessment. The assessment itself involves a
detailed review of any man-made water systems or
processes that use water in your workplace, and
that may cause harm to people through exposure to
legionella bacteria, and Legionnaires disease.
It will also review the effectiveness of any
existing risk management processes and control
measures in place to ensure you are taking
reasonable precautions to control the risks from
legionella bacteria and so meet your legal
obligations.

What is a Legionella Risk Assessment?
  1. A Legionella risk assessment involves a
systematic examination of the potential dangers
to people caused by engineered water systems in
the workplace. The purpose of the assessment is
to identify and assess the risks of exposure to
legionella bacteria from work activities and
    water systems.
  2. Although it is impossible to guarantee that
    pathogenic micro-organisms such as legionella
bacteria will not exist in a water system,
proactive water safety management and good
control procedures make it possible to
significantly reduce the factors that allow the
bacteria to grow to dangerous levels.
  3. A Legionella risk assessment is an essential risk
management process. It comprises a detailed
examination of the risks presented by man-made
water systems, and seeks to identify and assess
    the risks associated with Legionnaires'
disease through exposure to legionella bacteria.
  4. It is worth noting the legislation refers to hot
and cold water systems, cooling systems and other
risk systems. It also refers to water systems
both small and large. This explains why each
business and place of work must adopt the most
appropriate and comprehensive risk assessment for
    their own needs.

Management Responsibilities, Legionella Training
Competence
Training and competence are seen by the Health
Safety Executive as key aspects vital for the
successful control of Legionnaires disease and
Legionella in the workplace. In their Approved
Code of Practice ACOP L8, "Legionnaires' disease
The control of legionella bacteria in water
systems" they state that " ... Those
specifically appointed to implement the
legionella control measures and strategies
should be suitably informed, instructed and
trained and their suitability assessed. They must
be properly trained to a level that ensures tasks
are carried out in a safe, technically competent
manner and receive regular refresher
training." Paragraph 51. Health Safety
Executive Approved Code of Practice L8". The
latest, fourth edition of the HSEs ACOP L8 can
be ordered direct from the HSE website if you
require a hard copy, or downloaded here for free
ACOP L8 gtgt Whether you are a technician,
maintenance manager, you may have taken on the
role of the duty holder or been appointed the
responsible person, or you are a health and
safety manager wishing to improve your competence
levels in this important area of health and
safety, then we have a training course for you.
