  • Open University of Taras Shevchenko National
    University was established for the first time in
    the year 1833, and it was called Imperial
    University of Saint Volodymyr. The first rector
    was 30-year-old Professor Mykhallo Makymovych who
    qualified in folklore and botany.

  • He had been appointed by Emperor Nicholas I at
    18th of October in the year 1834. There were two
    departments that were working in 1834 and in
    1935. They were mathematics and physics with
    Department of Linguistics and history. There was
    also Faculty Philosophy.

  • In the year 1837, architecture professor called
    Vincenti Beretti, from St Petersburg Academy of
    Arts finished the design of University Building
    and its building started afterward. The building
    came to be known as the central building of the
    entire university, and it is still there up to
    now.

  • The botanical garden of the university was
    developed under the supervision of Professor
    Trautfetter and it was added to the grounds, and
    it is still the feature of the current
    university. The charter of the university got
    adopted in the year 1842, and the growth of this
    university is not something to dispute about.
    There were 37 departments of the University.

  • Thought to be an outpost of the Russian
    autocracy, todays government was not expected to
    have an aggressive approach towards the students
    and teachers of this facility. The university was
    put at a center of democratic movement since 1830
    until 1860. This is where Cyril and Methodius
    Brotherhood was established since 1845 until
    1847. Kostomarov, is a historian of the
    distinction and it is the head of Russian History
    department who was the author of the Brotherhood
    credo.

  • Taras Schevchenko, a brilliant poet who got
    employed in the art of the school like a teacher,
    he had a temporary position as an archeography
    commission, and they were working on ancient
    documents, and he was the intellectual
    inspiration behind members of Cyril and Methodius
    Society.

  • Liberal reforms with the new charter in the year
    1963, it saw the revival of scientific and
    educational activity at the university with the
    autonomously status which had extended. The list
    of the department increased to reach to 52 by the
    addition of over 15 departments.

  • European lecturers with the Russian lecturers got
    invited so that they can join other staff of this
    university and it reached to 90 new educators.
    The departments started to choose only talented
    and skilled students to join its research and
    academic teams.

  • By the year 1883, there were 1700 students who
    were already enrolled at this university. Most of
    the students were Ukrainians and Russians it was
    opposed to the enrolment of 1830 until 1840,
    which was mostly Polish.

  • In 1913, over 5000 students were learning at this
    university, and at least 160 were conducting the
    lecturers there. The university had 2 libraries,
    it had 2 observatories both astronomical and
    meteorological, it had 4 faculty clinics, 9
    laboratories, 2 clinical departments, 3
    hospitals with anatomy theater and a botanical
    garden or other facilities.

  • The university became active globally, and its
    academics started to travel around the world to
    do research trips to different countries, and
    they were a collaboration with well-known
    scientists around the world while publishing the
    papers in journals on an international level.
