Introduction
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
is the new way of providing support for
Australians with disability, their families and
carers. The NDIS will provide about 460,000
Australians under the age of 65 with a permanent
and significant disability with the reasonable
and necessary supports they need to live an
ordinary life. As an insurance scheme, the NDIS
takes a lifetime approach, investing in people
with disability early to improve their outcomes
later in life. The NDIS gives all Australians
peace of mind that if their child or loved one is
born with or acquires a permanent and significant
disability they will get the support they need.

The NDIA have developed the three items in the
NDIA Price Guide that describe different layers
of support coordination activity and plan
management as
  • Support connection
  • Time limited assistance to strengthen a
participants ability to connect with informal,
mainstream and funded supports, and to increase
    capacity to maintain support relationships,
resolve service delivery issues, and participate
    independently in NDIA processes.

2. Coordination of supports Assistance to
strengthen a participants abilities to connect
to and coordinate informal, mainstream and funded
supports in a complex service delivery
environment. This includes resolving points of
crisis, developing capacity and resilience in a
participant's network and coordinating supports
from a range of sources.

3. Specialist support coordination The
provision of support coordination within a
specialist framework necessitated by specific
high level risks in the participants situation.
This support is time limited and focuses on
addressing barriers and reducing complexity in
the support environment, while assisting the
participant to connect with supports and build
capacity and resilience. It may also involve
development of an intervention plan which will be
put in place by disability support workers.
