• What is an Exhaust Flange?

• Unlike passenger cars and trucks that connect
  exhaust pipes directly to the engine via the
  exhaust manifold, motorcycles, racing cars, and
  ATVs use exhaust flange kits. These kits replace
  the exhaust manifold, which would otherwise
  reduce engine efficiency by creating a back
  pressure that forces the engine to use more power
  to counteract the pressure.
• Laser cut flanges are typically individual pipes
  used to connect the exhaust outlets to the
  cylinders. The pipes converge right before they
  reach the muffler. The absence of an exhaust
  manifold makes it necessary to hold the exhaust
  header in its place with the help of an exhaust
  flange instead.

• Types of Exhaust Flanges

• There are different types of exhaust flanges used
  in motorcycles. The most common of the flanges
  work with exhaust pipes with flared ends to hold
  the flange in place. Another design option is the
  ball type, where the exhaust head bulges near the
  tailpipe, with the bulge portion supporting the
  exhaust flanges.

• Gasket Requirement

• Standard laser cut exhaust flanges require a
  gasket to function properly. This is because the
  flange acts as a seal at the end of the header
  pipe and needs a gasket for an opening. However,
  ball type exhaust flanges dont need gaskets as
  the bulge portion of the exhaust header itself
  creates a seal with the tapered part of an
  exhaust flange.

• Materials used for Gasket

• Hardware laser cut flanges operate under high
  temperatures. Hence, the gaskets used are made of
  several soft metals that are mixed with normal
  gasket material like paper (treated to resist
  heat without igniting at high temperatures). A
  gasket can take on different forms as well,
  including steel rings, crush rings, steel mesh
  rings, and tapered rings.
