1
Classroom Krav Maga and Real World Application
2
Oftentimes, students can focus too much on the
power behind a strike, and not enough on its
accuracy. This leads to misdirected energy, lost
opportunities, and risk of injury.
3
A combative can only be considered effective if
it actually connects. Therefore, equal attention
should be paid towards strength as well technique.
4
In a typical technical sparring class at EMA,
partners will engage each other to develop one
anothers skill sets. Sessions generally begin
with some pad work and logistical combos,
5
followed by light rounds where students apply the
lesson plan. They are taught to generate
offense, all the while practicing to block,
evade, absorb, and subsequently counter.
6
Partners alternate between positions of advantage
and disadvantage. This helps to underline the
importance of reading body language and footwork.
7
Although taught in a safe and controlled
environment, skills developed in sparring are
completely transferable to Krav Maga.
8
The same concepts apply avoid/minimize the
attack (defense), take a position of advantage
(footwork), and neutralize the threat (offense).
Whether a punch, kick, elbow, or knee the only
strikes which matter are those that land.
9
Power and strength are not substitutes for
accuracy. This becomes most obvious outside the
classroom. Street fighting is organic and
un-choreographed.
10
Attackers will be unpredictable, even
unanticipated. Through repetition and muscle
memory, students are better able to execute their
skills come time for fight or flight, and reduce
that deer in headlights moment.
11
Ideally, you want to end a fight in 30 seconds or
less, especially in multiple attacker situations
or when weapons are involved (e.g. knife, blunt
object, etc.).
12
Predicting movement and reading body language are
critical to well-timed (and consequently,
successful) strikes.
13
Theres no winning when it comes to street
fighting (not in the traditional sense) only
staying alive and minimizing injury.
14
Granted most individuals do not seek out
confrontation, self-defense is unarguably a skill
one should have and hope to never need, rather
than need and not have.
