1
Is There a Difference Between Krav Maga and Muay
Thai Martial Arts Classes in Toronto?
2
Both Krav Maga and Muay Thai have some
similarities, but essentially, they are
completely different forms of martial arts.
3
Before we get into what makes them difference,
lets learn more about their originals with a
brief history review.
4
Krav Maga Origins Krav Maga was developed during
World War II by Imi Lichtenfeld in Israel for the
Israeli Army,
5
after being asked to develop a comprehensive form
of survival and self-defense techniques he could
teach other and make it a part of the
standardized military training regimens.
6
Muay Thai Origins The actual origins of where
and when Muay Thai came into being have been
difficult to trace fully back.
7
However, most historians and marital arts experts
do agree it originated sometime in the 11th
century as it was being practiced in the Thai
Army by the early 12th century.
8
The purpose behind the development of Muay Thai
was to provide people with a means to protect
themselves from the constant threat of invaders
common during this time period.
9
Principles of Krav Maga The generalized premise
of Krav Maga is for self-defense by using the
body and any other items or objects around you to
quickly subdue an attacker.
10
Rather than focus entirely on specific sets of
body movements and strikes, Krav Maga
incorporates using your natural instincts to
determine the most effective and efficient means
of stopping an attacker.
11
Principles of Muay Thai The general premise of
Muay Thai is to strengthen and toughen the entire
body and use this newly developed strength to
stop and attacker quickly,
12
while preventing the attacker from finding any
openings or being attacked by another person. The
concept of subduing an attacker as fast as
possible is similar in some ways to Krav Maga.
13
Krav Maga Training Training in Krav Maga teaches
you how to protect yourself in the event of being
an attacked.
14
The movements tend to focus on finding the most
vulnerable points, while improvising, without
having to fully strengthen and toughen the whole
body.
15
Muay Thai Training Muay Thai, on the other hand,
places an emphasis on kicking and striking
movement, which involve using the shins, so this
is why it is important to strengthen and toughen
up the entire body.
16
As you can see, there are subtle differences
between the two forms of martial arts. It is
important to keep in mind this is just a general
overview of Krav Maga and Muay Thai and does not
include every detail or difference.
17
Which Is Better to Learn Krav Maga or Muay
Thai? Both forms of martial arts are great
skills to develop and learn. Oftentimes students
start with one form and then as they improve,
18
being training in the other form. Essentially, it
really comes down to your own preferences, goals,
and objectives. Plus, both forms are well-suited
for any skill level,
19
even for people who have never taken a martial
arts class before, as well as those who are
looking to improve their physical activity and
fitness.
