A Quick Historical Background
The first Adirondack chairs were made in 1903 by
Thomas Lee. During his family's vacation, he
needed an outdoor furniture for their summer home
in the Adirondack Mountains in Westport, New
York. Lee gathered a couple of wood planks from
the Adirondack mountain and made a chair which he
called Westport plank chair. He made a set of
chairs for his family. After coming up with the
final design, he offered it to his friend in
Westport named Harry Bunnell.

  • His friend Bunnell was a carpenter. At that
time, Bunnell needed a source of income for the
winter. Bunnell saw the commercial potential of
the design, so he made a couple of chairs and
offered them to the summer residents of Westport.
He filed for and was granted a U.S. patent for
the design in 1905 without the knowledge and
permission of Lee. He continued to craft hemlock
plank Westport chairs for twenty more years.
