All that you should know about an Epilogue
2
  • Writing a novel is not everyones cup of tea. It
requires lot of hard work with patience. You need
to be creative and at the same time realistic to
be a successful writer. You need to have deep
knowledge about every single and smallest thing
that is part of your novel. Penning down an
interesting plot and creating a perfect story
around it, has a sort of grilling in it.
    Additional pages like introduction, prologue,
acknowledgment, epilogue, etc adds more to this
    grilling.
  • Epilogue, a short piece of writing that is
usually written at the end of a literary work.
There are various ways in which an epilogue can
be written. Today, in this article, we will
discuss some of the ways to write an epilogue, we
will see whether a story needs an epilogue or not
and we will discuss some ways to write a perfect
epilogue. You can use this knowledge in your next
novel in order to make it a best one. These short
and simple things has significant contribution in
success of a novel. Make the best use of points
mentioned below and we hope you can achieve
    success.

3
Is your story in need of an epilogue?
  • Before writing an epilogue, the first
question is whether the story demands an epilogue
or not. Never ever add any unnecessary
descriptions and elaborations in your novel. Give
only what is needed. If you think that you need
to describe few more situations in your novel
then first see if those are relevant. Decide
whether those incidents can be added anywhere
else in the story. If yes, then your story dont
    need any epilogue.

4
Reasons that show your story demands an epilogue
  • If you want to annex some incidence that has
some link with what happened in the story but
doesnt involve characters of the story, you can
tell that incidence in an epilogue.

5
  • An epilogue is also used to tell an incident that
happened long after the end of your story. For
instance, if you have written a romance novel and
end of the story describes the couples being
happy together instead of all the turmoil's they
had faced. Then, in epilogue you can tell about
their marriage. You may think of adding an
incident that shows that after sometime the
couple got separated. Well, if you are planning
to that then let me tell you that usually an
epilogue is prohibited to have any shocking
revelation especially if it is a negative one.
  • Sometimes, writers use an epilogue to give a
glimpse of next volume of the novel. They use an
epilogue as a platform to promote the upcoming
volume of the novel. You can use an epilogue to
describe the moral of the story as well. This is
the best place to make a remark or statement. You
can present your view on the story. It can also
be used to draw comparison of story with real
life events. A gamut of incidence can be embraced
    in an epilogue.

6
Plan your epilogue as you would plan you story
  • Epilogue is a short direct
description of incidence that you want to include
in it. Plan it wisely using your senses and do
not end up writing a new book and story in it.
Write whatever you think is important and must be
adjoined. Later, cut it down as you would do in
the story. Try to make your epilogue short. Keep
in mind that it is not a story. When you write
out everything that comes in your mind first and
then edit it, it gives the best and perfect
    results.

7
When to write an epilogue?
  • If your story has a traumatic end or violent
climax then you should write an epilogue. You can
write an epilogue if your story ends abruptly
like if the main character dies. A bit of
explanation after an abrupt ending satisfy the
need of reader to know more about the story and
that enhances your sale as well. Readers,
generally want to know the full story. So, you
must feed them properly. In epilogue of such
novels, you can use epilogue in various ways. You
can use it to create buzz about your next novel
that can be a extension of this novel. You may
also choose to end this story there only and can
just give a brief description about other main
character of your novel. This doesnt mean that
you can never write another volume of the novel.

8
Know your best from your own experience
  • No two authors are same. It depends totally upon
you how to write and what to write. Also, there
is no hard and fast rule to it. You best way can
be anothers worst. Learn from your experience.
See and observe what your audience want and make
changes accordingly in your next novel. Read
other novels of the same genre and see how they
have written their epilogue. Do not copy, never
ever do the mistake of copying. Reading others
work is just for increasing the knowledge and
having a better and clear perspective. Do not try
to imitate or mimic others. Be original and
creative in your work that will give you much
    more success.

9
Some additional tips
  • Though it depends on author how he wants to write
epilogue and what new turn he wants to give, here
are some general points that need to be
considered. If you want to write another volume
of the book, use your epilogue to create interest
and enthusiasm in your reader. Know what is the
key point of your next volume and use it as a
tool to make your readers curious. You need to be
playful with your words. Tell a scene that can
make readers passionate about the next volume.
Even if you are using epilogue as a closure key,
try to give a little information about the side
characters as well. Main characters are important
but so are their friends and family.

10
Let your story rest for a day or two
  • After you are done with your story writing and
    epilogue, prologue, acknowledgment, introduction,
etc are all set and done. Let your manuscript
rest for at least a day before starting to
proofread it. This will give you time to come out
of the story and help you proofread better. While
proofreading you must proofread whole book.
Writers do this mistake of proofreading only the
story part. They forget that from acknowledgment
to epilogue, each and every part is prone to
    errors.
