Some Specialties Of Samarium Cobalt Magnets

About Samarium Cobalt magnets
  • Samarium Cobalt magnets or SmCo are strong
permanent magnets made of an alloy of samarium
and cobalt. It is less subject to corrosion than
a Neodymium magnet, and usually does not require
coating or plating. Suitable for certain
applications than Neodymium magnets, these are
known for high magnetic strength, exceptional
    temperature resistance and reliable performance
without oxidation protection. This magnet can
withstand higher temperatures than a Neodymium
magnet. The maximum operating temperatures of
Samarium Cobalt magnet is between 250 and 550 C,
Curie temperatures range from 700 to 800 C.
Having to design around this temperature range
leads to large performance differences in the
magnet properties. In other words, a machine
operating at room temperature will have more
torque than a machine operating at 180C for the
    same amount of input current.

  • 15 offers 16 MGOe to 22 MGOe and is made up of
approximately 50 samarium and 50 cobalt. The
15 series has a recommended operating
temperature of 250C and requires lower field
strengths than 217 materials to magnetize.

4
  • The 217 series has a maximum operating
    temperature of 350C. 217 offers 24 MGOe to 32
MGOe, composed of about 25 samarium, 5 copper,
18 iron, 2 hafnium or zirconium, with the
    remainder being cobalt.

5
  • The magnetic fields produced of Samarium Cobalt
magnets ranges from 0.8 to 1.15 Tesla. It is by
far the best product when power and high
    temperature resistance is required.

6
  • It can operate in conditions up to 500C without
    suffering any magnetization loss. Magnetization
integrity is high in these magnets, as they
    resist demagnetization handily.

7
  • Special grades of 217 can operate to even higher
temperatures and requires a higher magnetizing
field than alloy 15 does and multiple pole
    magnetization is sometimes possible.
