Title: Understanding the Various Types of SSL Certificates

1
Understanding the Various Types of SSL
Certificates
2
  • There are several kinds of SSL certificates being
used these days. Each of these certificates has
their own sets of features which must be
understood. Otherwise, you may not end up
purchasing the right SSL certificate for your
site. Here are some of the types of cheap SSL
certificate that you should be familiar with.

3
High Assurance Certificate
4
  • Before a high assurance SSL certificate is issued
to you, two things have to be verified first.
They are the validity of the business
registration and the ownership of the name of the
domain. These items will be mentioned on the
certificate to enable the visitors to your site
to check if the site is exactly what it says it
is. High assurance certificates need to be
validated manually. As such, they can take up to
a few days before they are issued.

5
Low Assurance Certificate
6
They are also known as domain validated
certificates. These certificates only contain the
domain name. The name of your organization or
business is never mentioned on the certificate.
They can be easily and automatically verified. In
order to check whether you are the owner of the
domain name, the authorities can simply send an
automated email to the email address that has
been listed on the WHOIS record of the domain.

As a result, low assurance certificates can be
issued instantly. They are a cheap SSL
certificate as well. On the other hand, customers
are less assured by them as the name suggests.
7
Extended Validation Certificate
8
  • Known in short as an EV certificate, these are a
new kind of SSL certificate which has been
developed for the prevention of phishing attacks.
To get the certificate, an extensive validation
will be performed of the business as well as that
of the person who ordered the certificate. The
time required to get the certificate can be up to
a few weeks. On the other hand, it will provide a
much greater assurance to the customers about the
security of the site as compared to a high
assurance SSL certificate. Moreover, it will
    transform the address bar green.

9
Wildcard Certificate
10
  • Wildcard certificates are capable of securing an
unlimited number of subdomains under a single
domain name. They are cheaper than getting
individual SSL certificates for each of the
subdomains that you have. Moreover, they are
easier to manage as there will only be a single
    certificate for numerous subdomains.

11
Chain and Root Certificates
  • It is possible for a certificate authority to
issue a SSL certificate with a tree structure. As
such, there will be a root SSL certificate which
is the highest certificate in the structure. All
SSL certificates that exist below this root
certificate will inherit its trust factor. Most
software applications including web browsers will
contain certain root certificates. They are
    automatically considered to be trustworthy.

12
Any certificate that gets signed by trusted root
certificates will also inherit that trust factor.
Those signed certificates can sign another SSL
certificate which will also be trusted. This will
remain the case as long as the web browser has
all the SSL certificates in the chain to link to
a trusted root SSL certificate.
13
Any SSL certificate between the root certificate
and your signed certificate will be known as an
intermediate or chain certificate. They have to
be installed to the server along with the primary
SSL certificate for the site. This will allow the
browsers to link the certificate to the trusted
authority. The majority of certificate
authorities tend to use intermediate certificates
for the sake of security purposes. Moreover, the
majority of devices and services support these
SSL certificates.
14
These are the major kinds of SSL certificates
that you should know. Keep in mind that you can
get a cheap SSL certificate as long as it is
trusted and suitable for your needs.
