The Toronto and GTA police will once again be
stopping motorists and checking for signs of
drinking and drug use. The RIDE Program
checkpoints are not just to look for drunk or
intoxicated drivers, but also those who may be
under the influence of drugs, or a mixture of
both drugs and alcohol.

alone, charged over 210 drivers with some form of
impaired driving. In 2014, there were over 190
people charged.

These numbers do not include the hundreds of
drivers, who may have received a warning,
three-day license suspension and fine. Nor do
they include the number of people charged during
the rest of the year outside of the holiday RIDE
Program operations.

Over the years, screeners at RIDE Program
checkpoints have identified specific behaviors of
those under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
One of the most notable is when a driver
approaches a checkpoint, and then decides to do a
U-turn or turn down a side street. What these
drivers did not know, is there are secondary
units located nearby, who are dispatched to
follow, stop, and screen the driver.
