Treatment Procedure For Fibroids
3
What exactly is Uterine Artery Embolization?
  • Uterine artery embolization, acronymed as
(UAE) is a treatment procedure to treat uterine
    fibroids noncancerous (benign) tumors that
usually develop in the uterus, without carrying
    any surgery.

4
  • This procedure aims at cutting off the blood
supply of the fibroids, thereby causing it to
shrink. The doctor who performs the procedure is
    called an Interventional Radiologist

5
How the process is carried out
  • The procedure takes about 1 to 3 hours to
complete and is carried out this way
  • A sedative is given to make you feel relaxed and
    sleepy.
  • A local painkiller (anesthetic) is applied to the
skin around your groin to numb the area.
  • A tiny cut (incision) in your skin is made to
insert a thin tube (catheter) into your femoral
artery, which is at the top of your leg.
  • The catheter is threaded into your uterine artery
to ensure proper supply of blood to the uterus.
  • Small plastic or gelatin particles are jabbed
through the catheter into the blood vessels to
block arteries that carry blood to the fibroids,
thereby causing fibroids to shrink and alleviate
    eventually.

6
Why the procedure is performed
  • UAE is considered to be an effective way to
treat some types of fibroids. You can consult a
physician at vascular disease center in
Bensonhurst to understand the condition of
    fibroids you have.

    given below
  • Bleeding, low blood count, pelvic pain or
pressure, waking up at night several times to

    spotting and irregular menstruation
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Abdominal distension, abnormal vaginal bleeding,
    cramping, or irregular uterine bleeding

8
What precaution should be taken before the
procedure?
  • If you consult a uterine artery embolization
specialist, do tell them if you could be
pregnant, or planning for the same. And about the
medicines, supplements, or herbs you are having
    with or without prescription.
  • Before commencing the procedure, you are asked
to stop consuming drugs like aspirin, ibuprofen
(Advil, Motrin), warfarin (Coumadin), and any
other medicines that make it hard for your blood
    to clot.
  • Note// Dont forget to ask your doctor which
medicines are allowed to consume. And quit
    smoking (if you do so).

What precautions should be taken post treatment?
  • You may need to stay overnight in the hospital
or may be discharged. Post treatment you are
needed to follow all the instructions given by
    the physician.
