Word Sorts

• Addressing Reading Comprehension

Step 1

• Choose 10 -20 content area words or words from a
  selected text. Have students write the words on
  index cards.

Step 2

• Arrange students in groups so they can work
  together to discuss the similarities and
  differences between the words

Step 3

• Have students conduct a closed sort or an open
  sort
• Closed Sort Students sort words by categories
  pre determined by the teacher such as same parts
  of speech, multiple meaning words or number of
  syllables.
• Open Sorts Students sort the words into
  categories they make themselves
• Example Volcano, Cave, Grave, Gravity could be
  labled as Elements outdoors
