Title: The rise of Drug testing, Breath analyzers and Saliva testing
1The rise of Drug testing, Breathalyzers and
Saliva testing
2It is increasingly common today for individuals
to be tested for drug use or alcohol
intoxication. While consent is required by the
individual before the testing is completed,
employers, law enforcement agencies and others
are increasingly using drug tests, breathalyzers
and saliva testing as a means of determining if
an individual is impaired. Some tests may also be
used to determine if the individual has recently
taken specific drugs even if they are not
currently impaired. Such tests make it easier for
drug and alcohol addiction to be identified by
others, but they also can have an impact on the
economy.
3The different types of tests
- At one time, drug tests were conducted only in a
medical environment by laboratory professionals. - However, todays drug and alcohol tests may be
completed with a simple urine, saliva or breath
test. - Some types of basic tests may be purchased at
local pharmacies, and they may include a simple
dipstick feature in the urine or saliva testing
kits. - Employers and law enforcement agencies may
invest in slightly more sophisticated equipment,
such as a breath analyzer.
4How the tests are used
- In a work setting, these tests may be used as a
pre-employment screening measure. They may also
be conducted randomly and without announcement. - Generally, it is the employees option to consent
or not to consent. However, it may also be a term
of employment that consent is required. - When consent is not provided, this may be grounds
for termination in some cases. Law enforcement
officials may request that you consent to these
if they believe that you are impaired.
5When individuals have a problem with drugs or
alcohol
- The drug tests available today are sensitive to
testing for everything from marijuana to cocaine
in trace amounts. - Some individuals who have a drug or alcohol
problem may be able to conceal their problem, but
random testing or law enforcement testing may
identify the issue. - Such issues may result in the loss of a job,
legal issues and more. They can negatively impact
a familys finances as well as the company where
the individual was employed.
6- There are several treatment options that
individuals can pursue if they believe that they
have an alcohol or substance abuse problem. - In-facility detoxification programs are effective
for many, and they may combine behavioral and
mental health services to patients. - Whether an individual has a seemingly minor
problem with drug and alcohol consumption. - Therapy and treatment is available for
individuals who believe they may have a problem.
