Nouabale-NdoKi National Park
It is increasingly difficult even now to find
travel destinations where to use an old adage
the journey truly is the destination. But this
best describes this trip to Nouabale-Ndoki.
Sixteen gorilla families along with ten solitary
silverbacks, amounting to some 150 animals, are
known to come to its Mbeli Bai to feed. There are
its gorilla silverbacks Kingo and Buka, success
stories of sciences habituation efforts.

Indigenous Communities in Northern Roc
It is possible to access indigenous communities
of BaAka (pygmy) in Northern Congo, by road, by
foot and by local dug out pirogue. This is
cultural travel at its best and can be combined
with a gorilla safari to Nouabale-Ndoki National
Park for those who have flexible schedules and a
truly adventurous bent.

Dzanga-NdoKi National Park
Prior to 2013, when the CAR underwent a coup
detat, its national park of Dzanga-Ndoki was
combined with its sister park Nouabale-Ndoki in
the ROC in a 12 14 day itinerary. We used
Brazzaville as an entry portal and Bangui as an
exit portal. Dzanga-Ndoki NP is known for Dzanga
Bai where scores of elephants come daily to mine
for minerals in the soapy soil. It also has
habituated Western lowland gorillas. Dzanga-Ndoki
and Nouabale-Ndoki complement each other rather
than duplicate their experiences, although it is
very possible to visit one OR the other. The CAR
park remains open to visitors but it is important
to monitor current conditions within the CAR
prior to travel.

Kinshasas Lola Ya Bonobo Sanctuary
A visit to this 30 hectare primate sanctuary 24
kilometers out of Kinshasa is very rewarding. Its
name means Paradise for Bonobos in Lingala. It
is the only bonobo sanctuary in the world. There
may be over 50 bonobos here at any one time.
Orphaned and rescued from local markets, they are
destined to end up as bush meat. Their caretakers
at the sanctuary are primarily Congolese women.
The goal is to re-introduce as many of the
bonobos as possible to the wild. Bonobos are
typically more active in the morning, so visiting
early can increase the chances of a good
observation. Most visitors are happy with a full
days visit but you can also make arrangements to
stay there.
