Who is a Patent Agent how can one become a
Registered Patent Agent?
A patent agent is an individual who is registered
to practice as a patent agent in the Indian
patent office. He can represent his client on all
patent related matters and procedures. One has
to clear the patent agent exam to practice as a
patent agent. The Indian patent agent exam is
held by the Indian Patent Office every year.

Exam in India

• The patent agent exam in India is held every
  year Nagpur, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.
  An individual can appear from any of these
  centers
• A law degree is not essential for appearing in
  this exam
• An individual can appear unlimited number of
  times in this exam
• There is no standard syllabus for this exam
• A person appearing for this exam should be well
  versed with the Indian Patent Act

Exam Paper Format

• The exam is structured into three parts
• First part includes 40 objective type questions
  of one mark each
• Second part consists of descriptive questions of
  60 marks on drafting of claims and specifications
• Third part is viva voce based on domain knowledge

Eligibility Criteria for Patent Exam

• The applicant should have completed 21 years of
  age and should be an Indian citizen
• Graduates in technology and science from
  recognized universities under Indian law or any
  other equivalent degree holder from a central
  university are eligible to appear for the exam
• Candidates in their final year can also appear
  after producing mark sheets, final degree etc.
  within two months of the declaration of the
  patent agent exam results
