Title: A Guide to sleep disorder relief

1
A Guide to sleep disorder relief
2
What is a sleep disorder?
  • A sleep disorder, or somnipathy, is a
medical disorder of the sleep patterns of a
person or animal. Some sleep disorders are
serious enough to interfere with normal physical,
    mental, social and emotional functioning.
Polysomnography is a test commonly ordered for
    some sleep disorders.

3
What causes sleep disoders?
  • Some common sleep disorders include sleep
apnea where the sufferers breathing stops for
short periods during sleep. This occurs due to
the persons airway being obstructed during
sleep, often accompanied by snoring. When air is
blocked and thus prevented from entering the
lungs, the victim gasps for air unconsciously
resulting in his/her sleep being disturbed. The
breathing stops for a short period of may be 10
seconds, and if this happens for at least 30
times within seven hours of sleep, the condition
is classified as apnea. Other forms of sleep
apnea include central sleep apnea and
    sleep-related hypoventilation which are less
common. Apnea leaves sufferers lacking sufficient
deep sleep and thus tired and drained. Although
not well known, its long-term effects could
    include high blood pressure, trouble
    concentrating, cardiovascular disease, depression
    and stroke.

4
  • Another common sleep disorder, which is believed
to affect almost eight to 31 per cent of the
general population, is bruxism or the involuntary
grinding or clenching of the teeth while
sleeping. A few of the causes are anxiety,
missing teeth, misaligned teeth, airway problems
or an irregular bite. Some of the symptoms
    commonly associated with bruxism are
hypersensitive teeth, aching jaw muscles and
headaches. Since the symptoms are hardly
discernible in some, those suffering from the
condition may not even be aware of it. However,
if left untreated, it may result in the wearing
of teeth, and even damage or breakage to teeth
and dental restorations such as crowns and
    fillings.

What are the solutions for sleep disorders?
  • In the UAE, the best solutions for dental-related
sleep disorders are provided by the German Dental
and Neuromuscular Clinic, which is the best
dental clinic in Dubai. Apart from helping
patients with dental devices, the professional
and highly trained dentists at the Clinic also
collaborate with medical doctors in related
fields to make sure the treatment is viable for
the patients overall health. These dental
experts in Dubai believe that every patient is
unique, and take special care and ensure that
their recommendation is the most helpful and
    beneficial for every individual.

6
  • To determine whether a person suffers from
Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a sleep study will be
performed by the dental specialists, either at
the patients home or in a sleep lab. A small
portable-monitoring device will be provided to
the person to be worn during sleep. After the
diagnosis is made, the patient will be advised on
the course of treatment which may include the use
of a CPAP machine, weight loss, oropharyngeal
exercises or surgical procedures. The advantages
and disadvantages of each of these dental
treatments will be explained to the patient
before any of them are carried out.
