Title: The (Not So) Secret Truth about Home Whitening Kits

1
The (Not So) Secret Truth about Home Whitening
Kits
2
  • Sure, you have seen the commercials advertising a
fast way to whiten your teeth right at home,
without having to pay for an expensive
treatment from the dentist. But what is the truth
behind them? Are they as effective as they claim
    to be?

3
How do they work?
  • Much like what you will get in a dental office,
the at-home whitening kits use a peroxide gel to
reverse the staining process on the surface.
Through continued use over the course of a couple
weeks, the whitening solution will gradually
remove the stains from your teeth caused from
coffee, tea, wine, smoking, and aging. Whitening
your smile will give you confidence and take
    years off your smile.

4
Are store bought kits as effective?
  • Both dental office home kits and store home kits
operate in the same way. The biggest difference
is that home kits you receive from the dentist
will have a higher concentration of the whitening
solution making it more effective at a faster
rate than what you can purchase in the store.

  • Keep in mind, however, that the stronger the
solution, the more sensitive your teeth will be
during the whitening process. Dental offices can
also create custom whitening trays that will fit
snugly on your teeth, allowing you to whiten your
teeth uniformly. The store bought kits have a
wrap that goes over your teeth, but is not
    custom-fitted. Professional whitening gels often
have fluoride and a tooth desensitizer
    incorporated into the product.

7
Do they hurt your teeth?
  • Unlike the methods of old, modern whitening does
not negatively affect your teeth in the long
term. In years past, whitening solutions were
harmful to your dentin and enamel, damaging your
teeth in the attempt of making them whiter. Since
the modern methods do not affect the enamel of
your teeth, they are perfectly safe.

8
  • Whitening can, however, increase the sensitivity
of your teeth. While this is not typically a
long-term problem, it can be unsettling and
    mildly uncomfortable during the whitening
process. This usually goes away after a few days.
Your dental professional will evaluate your teeth
    before recommending a bleaching product.

Whats the Verdict?
  • In comparing store-bought and dentist provided
solutions side-by-side, many agree that dentist
provided solutions are safer, have better results
and whitening can be achieved in a much shorter
    time with less maintenance.

11
  • While professional whitening solutions are
typically more expensive, your dentist will set
realistic expectations before you choose to
pursue treatment, preventing you from spending
money on a solution that may or may not be
    effective.
