Title: Dental Crowns: 5 Things You Should Know

1
Dental Crowns 5 Things You Should Know
2
Reasons to Place a Crown
  • Dental crowns are often used to repair or
camouflage a broken, discolored, chipped, cracked
    or decayed tooth.
  • Crowns are also used to protect a tooth following
a root canal or implant and as a part of dental
    bridge.

3
Types of Crowns
  • Full porcelain/ceramic
  • Porcelain crowns most closely mimic the
appearance of a natural tooth. However, they tend
to cost 10 to 20 percent more than other crowns
    and are also less durable.
  • Full metal
  • Metal crowns are very durable. Since they can
remain functional for up to 50 years, metal
crowns are a cost-effective option. However,
metal crowns are noticeable and may not be ideal
    for visible teeth.

4
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)
  • PFM crowns offer a middle ground between full
porcelain and full metal crowns. They are
constructed from porcelain with an underlying
layer of metal to give increased durability and a
    more natural appearance.
  • Other crowns
  • Some dentists also offer all-resin or stainless
steel crowns. These crowns are generally much
less expensive but offer decreased durability and
may not be perfectly fitted to the consumer's
    tooth.

5
Alternatives to a Crown
  • While a dental crown may be the best option, it
is a good idea to know the alternative treatments
    available.
  • Some dentists prefer to address highly decayed or
damaged teeth with large fillings or bonding.
  • Some dentists may perform a root canal without
crowning, although this may result in breakage or
tooth loss and should be monitored carefully by a
    dental professional.

6
Getting a Second Opinion
  • As with all medical care, it never hurts to seek
a second opinion before undergoing a dental
    procedure.
  • Some dentists even offer complimentary second
    opinions.

7
Proper Crown Care
  • It is very important to care for a crown properly
    to ensure its longevity.
  • Dentists recommend brushing and flossing the
crowned tooth three times a day.
  • Some dentists also recommend avoiding very sticky
or hard foods that may damage the crown or cause
    the crown to dislodge
