  • Like in any other sector of health, aging come
with its myths. These myths can be hurtful to
senior citizens and their caretakers if mistaken
for truths. Here are some common myths about
aging that caregivers should be aware of.

3
Dementia is Certain in Aging
  • Dementia is a modifiable medical condition, and
it should be treated as one. It should not be
pushed to the side as an inevitable side effect
of aging. If someone becomes forgetful, it could
be due to a change in medication, poor nutrition
    or other modifiable medical issues.
  • People have some control over their future with
dementia. Linkages have recently been found
between health in younger years and Alzheimer's
later in life. Many of the same health concerns
attributed to heart disease may also be a risk
    factor for dementia.

4
Everyone Gets Arthritis
  • Creaky and aching joints can be a result of a
lack of exercise. Exercising helps keep cartilage
thick and soft, which is what is needed for
joints to run smoothly. Avoiding physical
activity in the younger years will not help
    people prevent arthritis as well.

5
Senior Citizens are Unhappy
  • Researchers and polls have shown that even
senior citizens with significant physical and
mental issues are overall happy with their lives.
Most claim to be as happy as they were in younger
years. Senior citizens are found to laugh often
    and enjoy their lives.

6
Creativity Goes Away with Aging
  • Senior citizens who keep their creative juices
flowing tend to be happier and have a better
outlook than those who do not. Creative
activities often let seniors be less lonely
because they participate in groups coming
together to do a common interest. The more
creativity that is kept in a senior's life means
    more happiness and health.
  • Senior citizens are typically more socially
adept than younger people. Seniors understand how
personal relationships work. Socializing can be
the best thing to do for someone who is getting
older because it decreases stress. Mixing
creativity and socialization are a great way for
the aging brain to stay healthy.

7
Aging Makes You Resist Change
  • Senior citizens are very able to adapt to new
situations. Typically, they are experts at
remolding themselves with change. After a life's
worth of transitions, seniors are used to this.
Adaptability is certainly retained in old age due
to significant experience in practicing this
    human trait.
  • There is no blanket statement and universal
definition of the aging process. Everyone goes
through different hurdles as they get older.
People's outlook on aging is entirely up to them.
Overall, the healthier the life is lived, the
healthier and more enjoyable the aging process
is. Do not look at aging as a negative thing, it
    is often enjoyable.
