Introduction and Getting Started!
  • The Extended Essay (EE) is one of the
requirements of the IB Diploma Program. It is
written on a topic, that student is interested
in. The main point is to make a research on the
topic. A student must have a subject supervisor,
so topic has to be written in the limits of the
    subject.

3
Getting Started
  • Firstly, find a topic you are really interested
in. No need to find trendy topics.
  • Don't stress. 4,000 words of extended essay is
nothing after your research. You will find much
more information, like 5,000 8,000 words as
    your first draft.
  • Dont look at the quantity of words that this
task requires. Go to the point of the essay.
  • Remember to focus on specific topic instead of a
    general subject area.

4
Choose a Subject Area
  • Be sure to write about a topic you are really
interested in. Otherwise, you wont have leaning
to the subject. If you know that you like
physics, go for it. Find exactly what you are
interested in, or always wanted to know more and
make an investigation as one of your extended
    essay ideas.
  • Dont forget to include methods, materials and
observations as they all are part of the word
count. Furthermore, show the committee that you
know what you were doing with your extended essay.

5
Read a general academic article
  • Read academic articles of the chosen area and get
    the main point.
  • Conclusion of the reading an article must contain
    possible themes of your topic.
  • Get more information about the particular parts
of the subject you are writing about.
  • Dont even think to use materials from IB
assessments that you have mentioned in your
    subject.

6
Formulate a temporary thesis and outline
  • Dont rewrite facts or opinions you have read in
    other subject papers.
  • The point is to find possible answers and
    hypotheses.
  • Create such temporary thesis that will suggest
the points of your outline. It is the way your
reader will follow your paper through to the
    conclusion.
  • Dont forget to use IB extended essay title page
    format.

7
Write the rough draft
  • Be sure that your thesis is 100 specific to the
    subject.
  • Write and check the outline, in which every topic
    is relevant to the thesis.
  • Try not to start from the introduction. Collect
    and write the overall information.
  • Dont forget to include evidence, reflection,
    arguments, counter arguments, and interpretation.
  • Introduce relevant details and evidence to the
    thesis.

8
Revise the draft
  • Remember that the essay must have maximum 4,000
words and minimum 3,700. The main think inside is
quality of the paper, but not the quantity of the
    words.
  • Check whether the essay has proper sentence
    structure, paragraph development, style, smooth
transitions, and unnecessary repetition of facts
    or extended essay ideas.
  • Add some subject area criteria and estimate your
level according to it. Improve your writing,
    especially in the weak spots.

9
Add Title Page, Abstract, Contents Page, and
Works Cited
  • Title Page according to name has to have the
title, the full name of the candidate, the
candidates IB number, Extended Essays subject
area, the full date, essays word count, and
    abstract word count.
  • Extended Essay Abstract essentially a summary,
that is a shortened version of the thesis. It
should cover all the items mentioned in the
extended essay and be totally clear.
  • Contents Page start with the title of the essay
and continue to the table of contents, putting
page numbers of the essay. It must contain the
