Melatonin Levels Correlate with Frequent
Nighttime Urination
In December 2013, a study reported that melatonin
levels are associated with nocturia, or frequent
nighttime urination. The International Continence
Society defines nocturia as two or more nighttime
voids.

  • The investigators found that nocturia was
    associated with age, gender, body mass index,
    estimated glomerular filtration rate (kidney
    function), use of pharmaceuticals known as
    calcium channel blockers and benign prostatic
    hyperplasia.
  • (benign enlargement of the prostate).
    Additionally, nocturia correlated with total
    voided urine volume, duration in bed, day length
    and daytime and nighttime physical activity.

  • The investigators concluded, Melatonin secretion
    is significantly and inversely associated with
    nocturia in a general elderly population.
