How to Fix Print Spooler Service Keeps Stopping
in Windows 7, 8, 8.1
  • Print Spooler is the backbone of the printing
process carried out from your PC. It should
perform flawlessly while your PC is sending
    commands to print certain documents.
Unfortunately, Print Spooler malfunctions in some
Windows and doesnt work even after manually
starting it unless you debug the problem and fix
it properly. This article clearly shows you how
to fix automatic stopping problem of Print
    Spooler in Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.
  • You will not see any kind of warning messages
when your Print Spooler has stopped in Windows 8
and 8.1. When you give the command for printing a
document from Word, Excel or some other software
then the options for selecting the appropriate
printers dont appear. The available printers
will appear grayed out in the Control Panel as
shown below. When the print spooler is not
running, you cannot even see the properties of
    the printer.

Steps for Fixing Printer Spooler Service
  • Start the print spooler from Services or from
    the command prompt.
  • Services can be easily located in the Computer
Management section. It can be found easily in
Windows 8/8.1 by searching it with Services.msc.

6
  • Locate Print Spooler in Services. It might be in
the stopped state. Start it now.

7
  • The same process can be done through commands.
Open command prompt with administrator privileges
    (Run as Administrator).
  •  Use command Net start spooler for initiating
    spooler services.

8
  • To stop printer spooler services, use command
    Net stop spooler.
  • If print spooler keeps on stopping again, even
after restarting it, use the following steps.
This method is useful when print spooler is
malfunctioning due to random reasons, even
though Printer is fine physically and no paper is
    jammed in it.
  • You need to clear the print spooler files which
are temporarily stored in printing jobs. Print
spooler will restart and will probably run
smoothly next time. The files are stored in
Spool-gtPrinters directory that lies in the
Windows-gtSystem 32 folder of your root directory.
The queue will be disabled when you clear these
    files.
