1
Bad breath - an embarrassing problem
  • The causes and treatments

2
What causes bad breath?
Bad breath (halitosis) affects many people in
varying degrees. Almost everyone has bad breath
in the morning, but for some, its a more
pressing and serious issue causing embarrassment
and anxiety, preventing them from making friends,
building contacts or getting closer to people for
fear that their bad breath will put off others.
Could be caused by certain foods, health
conditions or lack of good dental habits such as
regular brushing or flossing of teeth, resulting
in accumulation of food particles among the teeth
and cavities. Bacteria working on these food
particles could lead to bad breath.
Sometimes, a person who has halitosis may not be
aware of it.
3
Other causes of bad breath
Not cleaning dentures or mouthguards properly
Dry mouth decreases production of saliva,
preventing the removal of particles which may rot
in the mouth Infections caused by oral surgical
wounds, decaying teeth, gum disease or mouth
sores and ulcers, diseases such as cancers,
certain metabolic disorders and chronic acid
reflux in the stomach Mouth, nose and throat
conditions, chronic inflammations in the nose,
throat and sinuses Certain medications In
small children, foreign bodies such as parts of
toys or food in nostrils

Treatments
Products like antibacterial toothpastes, gums
and mints offer temporary solutions by disguising
bad breath, but dont address the problem.
Brush your teeth and tongue twice a day, change
the toothbrush regularly so that it doesnt
harbour bacteria, use a mouthwash and drink
plenty of water. If you feel that foods such as
onions, garlic, and certain vegetables or spices
cause bad breath, try to give them up or at least
minimise consumption. Give up tobacco products
which are a leading cause of bad breath as well
as gum disease.   Seek treatment  for gum
disease or faulty tooth restorations. Seek
medical help as recommended by your dentist.
