How Geotechnical Lab Testing Equipment Determines
Permeability Of Soils?
Experts rely on permeability test method to
measure the rate of water flow through soil.
Under this method, water is forced by constant
pressure across the soil specimen and the flow
rate is determined. They usually perform this
test to determine the suitability of gravels and
sands for drainage purposes and is build on
remolded samples. However, this test is suitable
for certain materials that have a coefficient of
permeability of approx 300mm/day or more.
3
Major Apparatus Used In The Test Method -
  • Permeability equipment
  • Compaction hammer and leveling piston
  • Lab equipments, including
  • Soil mixer
  • Scoop
  • Top loading scale
  • Stop watch
  • Depth gauge
  • Drying oven
  • Moisture pans
  • Domestic water supply

4
Compaction Of Test Specimens
  • First add water to bring the specimen below the
    apparent optimum moisture content.
  • Mix water and material using soil mixer
  • Compact the specimen in the mold in five equal
    layers using hammer.
  • Once you compact the fifth layer, set the
leveling piston on specimen and use hammer to
apply five blows. Invert the mold and compact the
specimen and piston and put base ring in place of
    solid base.

5
  • Place the specimen upright.
  • Remove the leveling piston and determine the
specimen height to the closer 1mm. Later record
the average of three or four results.

6
  • The compaction process increases the soil density
by mechanical means by packing soil particles
closer together with minimum air voids.
Compaction offers several desirable changes in
    soil properties, such as-

7
  • It helps to acquire increase in shear strength.
  • It reduces compressibility
  • It increases density
  • It reduces permeability
  • It lowers erodability
  • It offers uniform soil mass of known properties
  • It lowers frost suspectability in cold regions.
  • It minimizes deforestation
