1
Locks, Keys and Locksmiths in Cincinnati, OH
2
Cincinnati locksmiths provide a wide, diverse
array of services. Contrary to popular belief,
not all of their job has to do with locks and
keys. They install door hinges and peepholes,
open doors for people who are locked out, and
more! However, locks, keys and security systems
are the backbone of their trade, and there are
far more varieties of these than the average
person is aware of. If you need locksmith work
done, a professional locksmith is the only
person who can really tell you what equipment
is best for your individual situation. It helps,
however, to have a general sense of whats
available.

Types of locks Knob locks Seen most commonly
on residential doors, and usually combined with
a deadbolt on external doors. Mortise locks
Locksmiths set mortise locks, containing a latch
and a knob, directly into the door itself.
Theyre mostly used for commercial doors and
apartment doors. Deadbolts Setting a deadbolt
above the knob or mortise lock adds extra
security, which most locksmiths in Dayton
recommend. Deadbolts consist of a horizontal
bolt that is opened and closed by a key cylinder
from the outside and a thumbturn on the
inside. Jimmy proof deadbolts Jimmy proof locks
are deadbolts that use a vertical bolt instead
of horizontal. This way, they cant be forced
apart from the outside.

Types of keys Cylinder keys A series of
notches called bittingon the edge of a cylinder
key moves pins of varying heights within the
lock cylinder. This is the most common type of
key used today. Dimple keys Unlike the jagged
edge of a cylinder key, a dimpled key is a
smooth rectangle with round hollows drilled into
the side of the blade. Master keys A master key
is a single key that a locksmith has set several
locks to fit. The master-keyed locks have two
locking mechanisms, one for the normal key and
one for the master key. Transponder keys
Automotive locksmiths program transponder keys
to each individual car. These keys contain
a transponder that communicates with the cars
computer by radio signals. If the signal is
incompatible, the key wont start.

Security systems Monitored systems This type
of system is linked to your phone line. If an
intruder triggers it, the system automatically
calls the police. A monitored security system
is the most surefire in some ways, since it
guarantees police attention, but the burglar
may have time to make off with some valuables
before they arrive.
6
Unmonitored systems When the alarm is
triggered, unmonitored systems set off a loud
siren and sometimes flashing lights. This will
often scare off a burglar, or alert the neighbors
to call the police. Wireless alarm
systems These are very adaptable. Some
incorporate sensors, cameras, motion detectors
and other settings that you can choose
from. Home automation Smart security systems
allow you to keep tabs on your home through your
phone. Depending on the type, you can remotely
arm and disarm your security system, view video
footage, and even control your lighting,
thermostat and appliances.
