1
Hematology, is the branch of science which deals
with blood related disorders
2
Summary Any alteration in your blood cells, blood
proteins, hemoglobin or mechanism of blood
coagulation can lead to many life threatening
diseases, including cancer.

Blood Disorders
1. RBCs (red blood cells) Blood disorder which
infects RBCs in your body is Anemia. People
suffering from Anemia have low RBC count. While
mild forms of anemia will show no symptoms at
all but severe case can lead to paling of skin,
breathlessness and fatigue. It also leads to
Sickle cell anemia, in which the RBCs stiffen up
and also get sticky, which leads to restriction
of blood flow, ultimately leading to organ damage
or severe pain in many cases.
4
2. WBCs (white blood cells) Blood disorders
affecting WBCs can lead to Lymphoma and
Leukemia. Leukamia is a type of blood cancer
causes of Leukemia include multiplication of
malignant WBCs inside ones bone marrow. While
Lymphoma affects the WBCs in the lymph system
of the body and multiplies and spreads throughout
the body abnormally. Both Leukemia and Lymphoma
can be cured by Chemotherapy.
5
3. Platelets Blood disorders affecting
platelets include different types of
Thrombocytopenia, which results in lowering or
increase in the platelet count leading to
excessive bleeding or excessive clotting of
blood.
6
4. Plasma Blood disorders affecting blood plasma
are sepsis and haemophilia.
7
  • Symptoms of various blood disorders includes
  • Breathlessness, unusual weakness, fatigue.
  • Recurrent fever in adults.
  • Bruising or abnormal bleeding of a wound.
  • Headache and red complexion.
  • Thickening of blood.
  • Thrombosis (excessive blood clotting)
  • Some of the blood disorders cause blood to
thicken because of increase in immuno-proteins,
RBCs, WBCs or platelets. This viscous blood
has difficulty passing through thin blood vessels
leading to decreased blood flow to certain body
    organ/parts. This condition is specifically
referred to as hyper viscosity Syndrome. People
may experience headaches, dizziness, and loss of
breath or confusion. This usually happen in the
    people suffering from multiple myeloma
  • The breathlessness and weakness caused by anemia
can also be caused by heart or lung disorders.
And easy bruising of skin, which is a suggestive
symptom of blood disorder can also be caused by
disorders of blood vessels or due to usage of
    various other drugs like aspirin.
  • If you spot blood passage in urine or stool, its
usually not caused by blood disorders. Blood
disorders often cause heavy bleeding, but
disorders other than blood disorders also lead to
    bleeding.
  • But some symptoms are definitely more suggestive
of a blood disorder. For example
  • Blood clots in a leg often causing swelling and
    redness.
  • Pin point rashness which is caused by less
    platelet counts.
  • Less platelet count also leads to bloody blisters
    inside mouth.
  • Lymphoma and Leukamia, both results in swollen
    lymph nodes.
  • Anemic pale skin.

8
  • Treatments of blood disorders
  • Anemia
  • Iron supplements.
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B12
  • Hydroxycarbamide, as it helps in forming
    hemoglobin.
  • Leukopenia
  • Antibiotics
  • Colony stimulating factors used as preventive
measure to stimulate growth of WBCs
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Drugs that injure clotting
  • Drugs that induce platelet production
