Title: Global Warming

1
Global Warming-
  • A THREAT TO EARTH

2
What is Global warming?
Global warming is the term used to describe a
gradual increase in the average temperature of
the Earth's atmosphere and its oceans, a change
that is believed to be permanently changing the
Earths climate.
3
Causes of Global Warming
  • Global warming is primarily a problem of too much
carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmospherewhich acts
as a blanket, trapping heat and warming the
planet. As we burn fossil fuels like coal, oil
and natural gas for energy or cut down and burn
forests to create pastures and plantations,
carbon accumulates and overloads our atmosphere.
    Certain waste management and agricultural
practices aggravate the problem by releasing
other potent global warming gases, such as
methane and nitrous oxide. See the pie chart for
a breakdown of heat-trapping global warming
    emissions by economic sector.

Effects of Global Warming
  • Ice is melting worldwide, especially at the
Earths poles. This includes mountain glaciers,
ice sheets covering West Antarctica and
    Greenland, and Arctic sea ice.
  • Researcher Bill Fraser has tracked the decline of
the Adélie penguins on Antarctica, where their
numbers have fallen from 32,000 breeding pairs to
    11,000 in 30 years.
  • Sea level rise became faster over the last
    century.
  • Some butterflies, foxes, and alpine plants have
moved farther north or to higher, cooler areas.
  • Precipitation (rain and snowfall) has increased
    across the globe, on average.
  • Spruce bark beetles have boomed in Alaska thanks
to 20 years of warm summers. The insects have
chewed up 4 million acres of spruce trees.

Ways of reducing Global Warming
  • 1.  Reuse, Reduce,Recycle
  • Reduce waste by buying reusable products as
    opposed to disposables.
  • 2. Use less energy around the house-
    Heating/Air-Con
  • By adding insulation into your walls and loft,
you can lower your heating costs by more than a
quarter as it reduces the amount of energy you
need to heat and cool your home.

9
Ways to control Global Warming
  • Plant a Tree
  • If you are able to plant a tree, start digging!
Via photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb
CO2 and give off Oxygen. They are a significant
part of the natural atmospheric exchange cycle on
Earth. There are too few plants and trees to
fully counter the increase in CO2.
  • Buying Energy-Efficient Products
  • When you come to buy a new car, choose one that
offers good mileage. Kitchen appliances now also
come in a range of energy efficient models. CFLs
are designed to provide more natural looking
light while using far less energy as that of an
incandescent light bulb. Try to avoid products
that have excess packaging, especially moulded
plastic and other packaging that is not
    recyclable.
