Blog Task Two
  • Film Posters

2
George Lucas in Love
This short film poster is belonging to the comedy
genre . Filled with features that instantly link
it specifically to the Star Wars franchise, it is
hard to look past the fact that this film is
trying to replicate this and therefore draw on
the audiences pragmatics and imitate the
original posters as closely as possible. The
layout of the illustrations and the drawings
themselves are almost identical to the original
films, along with the strip of text along the top
of the poster reading dozens of years ago,
mimicking the infamous Star Wars introduction.
The audience understand the link to the original
and begin to understand the parody esc feel that
the film poster and the film itself holds.

Im Here
Despite the film revolving around robots in an
alternative universe or possibly even the future,
I believe that the film poster points more
towards that of a romance. The short film is
primarily a love story and the poster reflects
this perfectly. Firstly, below the title we read
that the film is a love story, giving the
audience their first and very blatant indication
of the films genre. All text along the page is
positioned along straight lines, yet the image
taking up the poster shows the two main
characters sat at an angle. The two are sat
closely together and appear to be very
comfortable, yet the slightly off axis nature at
which they are sat suggests that there is
something more to the story other than the basic
romance plot.

Across the Hall
This short film poster appears to be typical of
either the suspense or horror genre. The first
thing that the audience notices is the actor
positioned at the left of the poster. The
expression on his face suggests panic and worry,
instantly making the audience feel slightly
uncomfortable. The other figure within the poster
is off focus and we therefor cannot see his face.
This also adds to the feeling of unease as we
feel anxious about the unrecognisable figure in
the hall. The murky colours used throughout the
poster also help back up the genre, as this
colour scheme matches the way in which the
audience will feel when watching the film.
5
Feature Vs Short
The feature film poster has to appeal to a wider
audience than the short film, meaning it is
filled with even more conventions typical of the
thriller/horror genre in order to attract a wider
audience. A higher budget also allows for a more
advanced appearance, for example the lighting
used for the photography is much more
professional, along with a slicing effect which
helps break up the poster for the three actors
positions. Each of the three actors stares into
the camera, creating synthetic personalisation
and therefor a relationship with the audience,
the unknown figure is still present, this time
however in the style of a silhouette and holding
a weapon, making the link to danger less subtle
and more obvious to those who are fans of the
genre. Where murky colours were used in the
short film poster, red, orange and black dominate
the feature film poster, signifying the danger
and suspense that lay ahead in the film. Both
posters sell the same message, the feature film
poster simply crams in more conventions in a more
visually appealing manor in order to appeal to
its larger audience.
6
Romantic Comedy
All of the rom-com posters show both the leading
male and female characters from the film. Two of
the three show the male looking at the female
while the female is looking away into the camera,
mimicking a stereotypical romantic storyline
where the man chases the woman. The separation of
the man and woman through text or lines
represents the issues that will arise during the
story, yet the subtle smirks and signs of
happiness show the audience that they can also
expect comedic elements from the picture
features that all romantic comedy audience
members seek. The lead actors names usually
appear at the top of the page in large text,
making it clear for the audience to see which
stars will appear in the film. All of the posters
along the right of the slide are all fairly
simple, much like the plot to most of the films
they do not look to over-complicate. Moreover,
audience members know exactly what they want from
a rom-com, a few laughs, maybe some tears, but
ultimately a love story with a happy ending and
a simple poster showing only the two lead
characters showing signs of affection usually
signifies that they can find all of these
elements within the film.
7
Horror
Most horror films use only dark and murky colours
for their posters, representing the dark nature
of the films and showing audiences at first
glance that the film is of the horror genre. The
introduction of factors such as blood and gore
are also indications of what is to come from the
films, not only is this a further indication of
what genre the film belongs to, but also gives a
specific insight into the area of horror in which
the films aims to provide. The title of the
film is usually displayed in a smudged or jagged
fashion, meaning the audience is made to feel
uncomfortable when reading the title, instantly
showing that the audience should not feel safe
with the film. Most importantly, when viewing the
poster the audience should be left feeling
scared, therefor a disturbing image of some kind
is usually placed on the cover. All of the
posters on the slide are examples of this,
leaving fans of horror wanting to know more about
the scary images they are seeing and therefor
encouraging them to go and see the film.
8
Science Fiction
Science Fiction film posters use sharp,
futuristic blues and purples to signify that the
film is of the genre. Alongside these colours,
black is also featured in the colour scheme,
showing the dark storylines that can also be
found within sci-fi films. Each of the three
posters along the side of the page show some form
of movement or action, this appeals to the sci-fi
audience as this is one of the conventions they
look for in films that they see. The main
character/characters can be found at the centre
of most posters, as well as the actors
name/names being displayed along the top of the
page. This allows for audience members to see who
is present within the film, usually a well known
actor associated with action
9
War
Audience members interested in the genre of war
look for conventions linked with battle and the
military. As we can see from the two film posters
at the side of the page, both include soldiers
wearing military uniforms showing the audience
clearly that the film will contain soldiers. The
film posters are not as dark as those belonging
to the horror genre, they do however contain
mainly dark colours. This is to reinforce that
the films are not necessarily filled with a happy
storyline and revolve around the dark topic of
war. As we have seen with many genres, the main
actors faces are displayed largely on the posters
along with their names showing audiences which
big actors they can expect to see in the film.
10
Action and Adventure
The action and adventure genre uses bright and
exciting colours to represent the excitement that
viewers can expect to receive from the film. Each
of the film posters on the page contain action
and movement, this shows fans of the genre that
the films are actioned packed a feature that
fans of the genre look for and therefor enticing
them to see the film.
