  • Charles and Ray Eames frequently visited their
friend Billy Wilder on his film sets. While
working, the acclaimed director would put down a
makeshift lounge chair so that he could sleep in
    between takes.
  • The couple already had considerable experience in
working with plywood. By applying heat and
pressure, Charles and Ray had been fully
processed plywood for the US Navy during World
War II. After the war, they continued to
experiment with the material. The smooth curves
of plywood on the Eames Lounge and Ottoman were
unprecedented in furniture design at the time.

  • The chair is upholstered in leather and has an
aluminum base. When it debuted on Arlene Francis
Home Show in 1956, they named the chair removed
a major step in the designers previous
creations. The lounge set was created in a period
of very bare and minimal furniture, but Charles
wanted a chair with the warm open feel of a used
baseball glove, a chair that you could let the
    stresses of modern life forgotten.
  • Despite his humble origins, the Eames Lounge and
Ottoman included in the permanent collection of
the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The first
completed set was given to Billy Wilder.
