As time goes by, and technology expands, so have
the choices and numerous selections of materials
available to the new home owner. What once was
linoleum in the kitchen, carpet in the den, and
tile in the entryway has become an archaic and
historic example of what flooring once was in
decades past. In current times, new homeowners
have plentiful options with a variety of cost,
durability, safety issues, and of course,
aesthetic appeal. We shall explore the different
flooring options available, and address benefits
and potential problems with each flooring
material.

Carpeting Back in the 1970s a plush shag carpet
was all the rage. Its appeal fell by the wayside
over the years with the invention of durable
carpet that was hearty but quite beautiful.
Berber carpet has now become much the mainstay
for carpeted areas and can be purchased for a
reasonable cost. There still are numerous other
piles and variable costs. With proper treatment,
the carpet can remain clean, and require little
upkeep other than a regular vacuuming. In high
traffic areas, carpet can maintain its texture,
and wear very slowly. Carpet in general is
primarily used to bring warmth to the room,
insulate, and bring a coziness to the home. It
also caters to barefeet, and is easier on the
back. Upkeep with an occasional cleaning will
promote the life and appearance of the carpet.
Most importantly, one must get a carpet pad that
has a thickness worthy of the carpet itself.

Hardwood and Laminate Flooring Many years ago,
hardwood flooring was the staple flooring of most
homes it was the only durable flooring
available. Overtime, the cost of hardwood
flooring has increased exponentially and in order
for it to have a long life, it requires great
care. The floor requires polishing to keep its
healthy appearance. It also requires a sealant
to protect the wood, and this needs to be done
regularly in years to come. The great appeal of
hardwood is its beauty and durability, yet it
remains difficult to afford.

For the last two decades or so, laminate flooring
has taken center stage as the most affordable
option that looks very much like hardwood. The
appeal is the ease of installation, the variety
of choice in pattern and color, and the little
maintenance required for upkeep. Laminate
flooring also resists shifting due to ground
movement better than hardwood. Laminate floors
also are better underground and in areas of
potential moisture.

Linoleum, Tile and Stone Flooring Linoleum has
been available for decades, and its benefits are
still plentiful. It is easy to install. It is
the easiest to care for, and it is durable with
unlimited choices. Highly used in kitchens and
baths, it stands well against moisture. However,
ceramic flooring has become popular for all the
same reasons. There is unlimited options of
ceramic flooring choices, and it is highly
durable without suffering any dings or wear. One
must select a texture appropriate for the area
involved, as children and elderly are at risk for
slip and fall if the floor is wet. Although
ceramic is harder on the feet and back, it is
easy to do it yourself. When venturing into
the choices of marble or granite, it is best to
discuss this option with a specialist.
