Title: Registered Nurse Midwife Littleton

1
Midwife Scope of Practice
Midwifery as practiced by Certified Nurse
Midwives (CNMs) encompasses primary care for
women across the lifespan from adolescence beyond
menopause, with a special emphasis on pregnancy,
childbirth, and gynecologic and reproductive
health. Midwives perform comprehensive physical
exams, prescribe medications including
contraceptive methods, order laboratory and other
diagnostic tests, and provide health and wellness
education and counseling. The scope of practice
for CNMs includes treatment of male partners for
sexually transmitted infections, and care of the
normal newborn during the first 28 days of life.
Our Midwife Credentials The American College of
Nurse Midwives (ACNM) is the professional
association that represents certified nurse
midwives (CNMs). Certified nurse midwives are
registered nurses who have graduated from a nurse
midwifery education program accredited by the
Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education
(ACME) and have passed a national certification
examination to receive the professional
designation of certified nurse midwife. CNMs have
been practicing in the United States since the
1920s.

South Denver Midwives Provide Birth Stools to
Hospitals
The South Denver Midwives have provided birthing
stools to both the Littleton Adventist and Castle
Rock Adventist hospitals to assist women with
natural child birth. Gravity encourages the baby
to come down into the pelvis and the stool can
really help women focus their pushing efforts.
Its also great for cervical exams outside of the
bed and provides a nice supported squatting
position for birth. We encourage frequent
position changes and do not require women to
birth in the bed.

South Denver Midwives Accepts Transfers During
Pregnancy
If you are unhappy with your current provider or
hospital, or you are considering transferring to
the midwifery care model, the South Denver
Midwives are here for you. Our team of highly
trained, Certified Nurse-Midwives, are able to
accept transfers even late into pregnancy.
Clearly, it can be hard to change providers
during your pregnancy.
This decision may be driven by a very practical
matter such as moving into a new home, or a much
deeper philosophical difference or care
expectation with your current provider. You will
find our team very understanding, and hope we can
make your transition as smooth as possible.

South Denver Midwives Support Project C.U.R.E.
Assembly Day
The South Denver Midwives volunteered time to
support Project C.U.R.E., a non-profit
organization that helps provide basic medical
supplies for birth in countries that lack the
most basic tools to ensure safer births for mamas
and babies. During Assembly Day (pictured
here), the Maternal and Infant Health kits (MIH)
are assembled using donated medical supplies.
Once completed, these MIH kits shipped around the
world to help provide a safer birth experience.
Getting Started with Project C.U.R.E. The
Maternal and Infant Health kits started about 5
years ago when a friend of mine Kris Combs, CNM
was traveling to Haiti and helping in a clinic
where pregnant women would often deliver. She
would collect the supplies from unused items that
were to be thrown away and created a modest
birthing kit.

Pregnancy Resources
We would like to take this opportunity to
congratulate you on your pregnancy and welcome
you to our practice. We are very honored to be
participating in your care during such a
wonderful time in your life. Pregnancy can be
exciting but also occasionally stressful or
confusing. Whether this is your first pregnancy
or your third, you will have questions about what
to expect. The providers and staff at South
Denver Ob/Gyn have created this information
booklet to help answer some common questions that
many women have.
Our goal is to provide you with the highest level
of care, through a team approach. Our physicians
and nurse midwives want you to have a happy and
healthy pregnancy and birth. We encourage you to
communicate with us, so that we can help answer
your questions and address your concerns.
