Ulticon Builders Helps Typhoon Pablo Victims in
COMVAL
2
Compostela Valley (ComVal) is the 78th province
in the country by virtue of Republic Act No.
8470, signed by the former President Fidel V.
Ramos on January 30, 1998. It is located in the
Davao Region in Mindanao. Compostela Valley is
divided into 2 districts and is composed of 11
towns. The municipality is originally dependent
on mining and in Barangay Kingking alone, gold is
estimated to be at 10.3 million ounces with
copper deposits of 5.4 billion pounds. However,
aside from mining, some of the communities within
the area thrive through agricultural means.
3
The descendants of Compostela Valley (COMVAL)
came from different ethnic tribes such as the
Mansaka tribe, Mandaya, Manobo, Mangguangan,
Dibabawon, Aeta, Kamayo, Davaweño and Kalagan.
They mostly speak in Cebuano as it is the
dominant language in Mindanao.Unfortunately, on
December 4, 2012 this beautiful place was left
defenseless against Typhoon Bopha, known in the
Philippines as Typhoon Pablo. It was the
strongest tropical cyclone to ever hit the
Southern Philippine island of Mindanao as of
2012, making a landfall as a Category 5 super
typhoon with winds of 175 mph (280 km/h).
4
According to the National Disaster Risk
Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) the
death toll reached up to 184 in Compostela Valley
alone and the typhoon caused destruction in
Mindanao, leaving thousands of families homeless
and more than 600 fatalities. The Tropical
Cyclone destroyed homes, electricity lines,
bridges, roads, etc. Even the road in Andap-Cagan
Road which was constructed by Ulticon Builders,
Inc. did not escape the wrath of typhoon
Pablo.The damage in agriculture and
infrastructure in Compostela Valley province
reached at least 4 billion pesos, equivalent to
75 million or 98 million U.S., with the typhoon
destroying 70-80 of plantations, which were
mostly bananas grown for export.
5
The Department of Public Works and Highways
(DPWH) sought help from Davao City contractors.
Ulticon Builders Incorporated, headed by Carlos
Charlie S. Gonzalez of Davao, heeded the call
and donated in kind a substantial amount of
relief goods and GI sheets for the survivors of
bagyong Pablo in Compostela Valley.  This simple
and kind donation by Ulticon touched the lives of
our countrymen who were in need and certainly has
gone a long way in helping them rebuild what was
lost and destroyed by Typhoon Pablo.
