Ihab Anwar What to See in St. Petersburg
As a former Semester at Sea participant, Ihab
Anwar, as well as his fellow students, enjoyed
the opportunity to visit Saint Petersburg,
Russia, home to the world famous Hermitage art
museum. Displaying an impressive collection of
works produced by some of the best talents over
the past few centuries, The Hermitage continues
to be one of the longest standing, and most
ornate, art museums in the world, and is a
must-see for anyone new to the St. Petersburg
area. Anwar enjoyed the chance, however brief, to
experience The Hermitage up close and personal,
and plans to revisit the museum once his studies
are concluded.

Ihab Anwar The Oreshek Fortress
The Oreshek Fortress caught the eye of Ihab Anwar
during his recent trip to St. Petersburg, a stop
in what was an incredible Semester at Sea
adventure. A testament to the rich and storied
history of the St. Petersburg area, the Oreshek
Fortress has stood tall since the early 12th
century, and continues to be a vital monument
within what is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though Anwar and his classmates were unable to
tour the fortress during their brief St.
Petersburg visit, they were afforded the chance
to take pictures from afar, as well as to learn
just how significant the site has been to
military strategy throughout the last millennium.

Ihab Anwar A Look at Barbados
Formerly a key British territory, the Island of
Barbados maintains a heavy British influence, and
continues to be a popular tourist hotspot in the
Caribbean region. Ihab Anwar and his fellow
Semester at Sea classmates enjoyed the chance to
visit and tour Barbados Port of Bridgetown just
last year, as well as to see and explore much of
the port town in greater depth. The island, which
is the easternmost of all Caribbean Islands,
serves as a reminder to academics and vacationers
alike of the days of European empire, though the
islands sandy beaches, resorts and warm
Caribbean waters continue to be its primary draw
for visitors from around the world.
5
Ihab Anwar Visiting Lisbon
Visiting the Port of Lisbon was perhaps one of
the most memorable and rewarding experiences of
the Fall 2014 Semester at Sea adventure, at least
for program participant Ihab Anwar. With such
beautiful historical sites as the Monument to the
Discoveries, the Belem Tower and the Cristo Rei
statue, the Port of Lisbon provides each new and
returning visitor the chance to experience what
was perhaps one of the major centers of the
Portuguese Empire a historical shipping and
military hub that was of great significance to
the empire for centuries. Anwar recommends
putting the port city on your European itinerary.

6
Ihab Anwar The Town of Le Havre
A memorable stop for Ihab Anwar and the Fall 2014
Semester at Sea excursion was the French port
city of Le Havre, a major commercial port and the
second largest in all of France. Founded in the
early 14th century, Le Havre experienced a
considerable boom, both in terms of prosperity
and in population, at the end of the 18th
century, though a great deal of the city was laid
to ruin during the 1944 aerial bombings. The
city, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
continues to be one of the most competitive ports
in Northern France, as well as to serve as a
major shipping and commerce hub.
7
Ihab Anwar Traveling by Boat
Ihab Anwar recently enjoyed the chance to explore
and learn about the world as a passenger of the
MV Explorer, which served as the transport vessel
for the Fall 2014 Semester at Sea program. During
the three month journey, Anwar became intimately
familiar with the dos and donts of boat travel,
including the need for a daily physical exercise
routine.
8
Ihab Anwar A Brief Look at Gdansk
One stop during the Fall 2014 Semester at Sea
voyage was Gdansk, Poland, birthplace of the mid
20th century Solidarity movement and an important
commercial and shipping hub for centuries. Ihab
Anwar, a Semester at Sea student, enjoyed the
chance to experience a region so crucial to the
fall of Eastern Europe communism, and to briefly
tour what continues to be an important, even
vital, European industrial center. Anwar and his
classmates were provided a short history and tour
of the historic city, as well as the chance to
experience a medieval merchant settlement just on
the outskirts of the sprawling Polish community.
9
Ihab Anwar Packing for a Voyage
As 2014 Semester at Sea student Ihab Anwar
quickly came to realize, packing for an extended
boat trip is much the same as preparing for any
other mode of travel, in that it is always best
to pack only the essentials, and to keep your
traveling gear as light and mobile as possible.
Now an experienced cruise passenger, Anwar
recommends packing only the most basic of
essentials before setting out on your journey.
Anwar, for instance, did his best to eliminate
anything that would have made mobility an issue,
taking only a camera, journal and copies of his
passport along with him at every stop along the
way.

Ihab Anwar Keeping a Journal
