GROUND WATER
A Valuable but Diminishing Resource
4
INTRODUCTION
  • It is the water located beneath the earth's
surface in soil pore spaces and in
    the fractures of rock formations.
  • The study of the distribution and movement of
    groundwater is hydrogeology, also called
    groundwater hydrology
  • India is the largest user of groundwater(230
cubic kilometres of ground water per year, 1-4th
    of global)

GROUND WATER MONITORING
  • Monitoring of ground water regime is an effort to
obtain information on ground water levels and
    chemical quality.
  • The important attributes of ground water regime
monitoring are ground water level, ground water
    quality and temperature.
  • Ground water levels are being measured four times
a year during January, April/ May, August and
    November.
  • The regime monitoring started in the year 1969 by
    Central Ground Water Board.
  • At present a network of 15640 observation wells
located all over the country is being monitored.

16
Ground Water Management Scheme
Objectives of the scheme
  1. evolve strategies for scientific planning,
development and management of ground water
    resources under different hydrogeological
    environs
  2. regulate and control the development and
    management of ground water resources.
  3. conduct Research development studies to meet
the upcoming challenges in ground water
  4. transfer of knowledge and education in
    hydro-geological research and ground water
    management.
  5. Also increase capacity building in all aspects of
ground water development and management through
    information dissemination, education, awareness
    and training.
  6. Increase coordination with concerned central /
    state govt. organizations

RAJIV GANDHI NATIONAL GROUND WATER TRAINING
RESEARCH INSTITUTE (RGI)
  1. first adopted during IXth five year plan
    running continuously since 1997
  2. Main aim of scheme is to looking into the
    emerging problem ground water mgmt.
  3. Proffessionals propely equiped with proper
    training.
  4. For providing the proper infrastructure and
manpower for research and training the RGNGWTRI
    was launched at Raipur.
